Day 1
Late Morning
A silent, black-clad figure peered through the entrance to the dimly-lit hatching caver, waiting only long enough to satisfy itself that the queen was dozing in the midst of her eggs. The silent figure snuck around the corner, making its silent way across the sands, careful not to wake the queen or otherwise to raise an alarm. When the figure reached the nearest eggs, it reached into a pocket and withdrew a long, sharp object which it held out over one of the eggs, just a few inches over the surface. The gleaming point held in place for a moment over the egg, then moved over to another one...and then another.
<Will you hurry up?> asked a mental voice from outside the cavern. The figure froze as a black dragon's head appeared in the entrance.
*Shhhh!* the figure cautioned. *She'll hear you!*
<And that would be bad, I know,> Asralyn agreed, cocking his head. <If Jalaran saw you in here, she'd certainly want to know what you're doing...>
*I know, I know...!*
<And if she sees you counting the eggs, she'll certainly ask you why.>
Jesseret frowned and gave his dragon an annoyed glance. *And if Jalaran knew that I didn't know how many eggs there were, she'd then want to know how many candidates I'd found...aargh, now you've made me lose my count!* He turned back to the eggs, using the sharp stylus to point at one egg after another as he did his silent count, then used it to make tick-marks on the small notepad he held in his other hand.
<Well, its a good thing she's asleep,> Asralyn commented. <Um, DO we have enough candidates?>
*Well...* Jesseret hedged, hoping he'd overcounted the eggs. He started counting again, forgetting to keep an eye on the queen to make sure she hadn't awakened to see him there. |

Day 1
Late Morning
Jalaran dozed, unaware of someone entering the Hatching Cavern. She had tediously moved and turned the eggs with her snout and fore claws, nearly an hour ago.
As she dozed, someone stole into the cavern and had been counting the eggs. She suddenly heard Asralyn, then her own nostrils caught a whiff of him, as well as the person inside the cavern...which she now figured out was Asralyn's rider. Both seemed to think she was asleep, but instead she listened.
She opened one warily eye, just a slit to watch as the human came in close to her eggs...What was he doing with HER EGGS...she wondered.
As he drew closer, she raised her head slowly, so that it loomed over top his head. Suddenly, right over top his head, she let out a tremendous roar, that seemed to shake the walls of the cavern. She breathed out a warning puff of fire near him.
{Why do you come into the Hatching Cavern?} she asked him as she watched what he was doing. {And counting the eggs...why?} she added.

Jesseret hit the sand when the queen roared. He rolled over to see her glaring down at him.
*Er...um...well, I'd heard that...you'd laid an unprecedented number of eggs...yeah, tha's it...and, I wanted to, well, see if it was true! And I must say, dear Jalaran, you have positively outdone yourself this time!!*
He stood up and started bowing profusely. He'd learned what he wanted to know - he was still at least *two* candidates short of what he needed to produce for this hatching. Now, the question was, could he get out of here without Jalaran finding that out? |

Jalaran turned to face, full on with the human, bringing her large head down over him, her teeth bared slightly. {Is that all?} she asked him.
Her hot breath warming the human's face. As she glared at him...a low rumble in her throat, giving him warning. She then raised her head back higher, resuming her previous position.
Jalaran then put her tail around the her eggs, protectively, as she kept a wary eye on him.

Jesseret grinned weakly at the huge queen as she loomed over him. "Um...well...." He knew that she wouldn't believe him if he just kept trying to flatter her, so he decided to give her at least a part of the truth.
"Well, you know...you have laid a *very* impressive clutch here...why, I can't remember when I've seen so many eggs! Er, how many eggs are there again? I knew the number, of course, but it just slipped out of my mind for the moment..." |

Jalaran gave another low growl as Jesseret tried his hand at flattering her. She was in no mood for that...and let him know by her growl.
As he spoke of the number of her eggs...she gave a snort, then turned her back and went to curl up around her eggs.
{I suggest you get out there and find me my candidates!} she replied, as she hid her eggs from his view. She then breathed her hot breath onto the sands, warming them again, as they seemed to be cooling.

Jesseret began slowly backing out of the cavern. *Ah...yes, that would be an excellent idea!* he agreed. What he was really thinking was that it would be a good idea to get out of the cavern before Jalaran started asking any more questions, but he made himself keep smiling all the way out the door.
Asralyn didn't have any such concerns, and as soon as Jesseret had gone, he walked in and settled himself down near the entrance. <Well, you are looking very pretty today!> he told Jalaran, in his usual flattering way. He favored her with a toothy smile as he cocked his head and waited for her to respond. |

Jalaran watched Jesseret back his way out of the cavern, with suspicious eyes, as she bespoke her rider. 'You're quite right on that Jal! How's those eggs dear?' Traika asked. {Doing well...and would be better is that Head Searcher of yours would keep out of here and do his duty in finding me those Searchlings I've asked for.} she replied.
'He's doing what he can dear...in fact I'm sitting with one he's found already!' she told the queen. {Really now? And is he worthy?} the queen asked. 'Well...he wouldn't have been searched if he wasn't dear...you know this!' she replied.
Jalaran faded from Tarika's mind just as Asralyn entered the cavern, and as usual, Asralyn spoke to her in his flattering way.
She turned her swirling indigo colored eyes on him, where he was settled near the entrance. His toothy smile, his cocked head at her, his flattering words...all of these had made her lose her train of thought...for a mere moment...as she took it in. But, it only lasted for a moment....
{Is that the best you can do, after allowing you rider in here to peer at my eggs?} she asked him, though her mental tone was soft, and less threatening, than it had been with Jesseret.

Jalaran watched Asralyn closely as he lowered himself, careful not to come too close to her and her eggs. As he spoke of what she thought she would like him to do...she had no need to think of her words...she had her response ready for him.
{Get him looking harder for candidates...stop shirking your duties by letting him come in her to disturb me and my eggs. For I am almost positive he does not have enough to stand for the Hatching when it comes time.} she replied as she watched him.
Of course she knew the pair was most likely doing what they could...but she also knew Asralyn and his rider well enough.

Asralyn cocked his head, knowing that his rider would probably be in big trouble - because while he knew that his rider always managed to get enough candidates, Jalaran would want to see them several days beforehand, and he wasn't sure that could be managed. Maybe if he could get her to loosen up just a bit...
He walked back over into a corner of the hatching cavern, a short distance from the eggs. <Perhaps you would feel better if you got away from those eggs for just a few moments. For instance, you could come over here with me..?> This would distract her from the eggs for just a bit, but would leave her close enough to watch them. That is, if she agreed. Queens were unpredictable when they had eggs on the sands! |

As Asralyn walked over to a corner, a short distance from her and her eggs...she watched him closely. When he settled into the corner, she turned back to her eggs, and began slowly nudging them with her snout, turning them.
She listened to Asralyn's words, and when she had finally turned the last one, she turned back to look at him. {I suppose a small break won't hurt...and I can still see them.} she said as she raised up and walked over to him. She then nestled down on the warm sands next to him.

Asralyn scooted in closer to her so that they were touching. <I am glad you decided to come over,> he told her. <I am sure that guarding those eggs day in and day out must be quite a chore, and you were getting...> He stopped himself and cleared his throat, not wanting to say she'd been getting grumpy.
Instead, he used the tip of his nose to rub against the side of her neck. <I wonder if any of the little ones will look like me?> he wondered. |

Jalaran felt Asralyn move closer as he spoke. {It is quite a chore...but I manage. And I was getting what?} she replied, as he rubbed her neck with the tip of his nose.
{Who's who?} jalaran asked Tarika when she heard her thoughts. 'Just someone Jesseret...never mind!'
'Another candidate?' she heard Tarika's thought again. {It's about time Jesseret started doing his job, instead of sneaking in here.} Jalaran said. 'Jalaran, he's doing the best he can.' she replied back.
{Look like you? It's possible...and I do hope so! But I also hope they don't try to shirk around their duties either!} she told Asralyn as she heard his words about their young-ens that were growing within their shells, warmed by the sands.
She snuggled into him, laying her head on his front legs, allowing some time for herself to rest.

Asralyn leaned down and rested the tip of his nose on the back of Jalarin's neck. <You really do work too hard!> he told her. <After this hatching is done, I will take you over to the hot springs to soak out all this tension you've managed to inflict on yourself.>
In the meantime, though, he did need to put in a good word for his rider. <And you know, my rider really *is* pretty good about getting candidates for you...even though he does often come through only at the last moment. If you are worrying about him not getting enough candidates, I think you can relax!>
He grinned and used his nose to shift some of the sand around, piling it up around her sides. <Here, now you can feel all warm and relaxed just like one of your eggs!> he told her proudly. |

Jalaran started relaxing more and more, as Asralyn spoke to her, his tone soothing to her. {That would be very nice Asra...} she replied as he rested the tip of his nose on the back of her neck.
As he spoke of his rider, she turned her head just enough to look at him. She gave a small snort, as a sigh. {Yes I know...he hasn't failed yet...just bothers me that he's sneaking in here to take a peek at the eggs, when he should be out there finding those candidates!} she replied.

Asralyn nuzzled her, his tail sliding around to scoop up yet more of the warm sand against the queen's flanks. She seriously needed something to take her mind off of this, he decided! He nuzzled the back of her neck with the tip of his nose. <I know, let's pretend this is a sunny, sandy beach instead of a hatching cavern!> he suggested. <Roll over and I'll scoop sand over you to get you nice and warm!>
He nuzzled her side with his nose to get her to roll over. <Pretend you can hear the ocean waves, and the sounds of the surf!> he chuckled, making a hissing noise that was supposed to sound like waves crashing against the shore as he continued to nudge her. |

Letting him scoop the sand around her flanks with his tail, she did her best to relax. As he told her to roll over, and pretend they were on the beach, she gave a soft chuckle in his mind, but did as he asked, then touching her snout with his.
{You are so amusing at times....} she said letting her mind trail off, as she closed her eyes. She relaxed herself into the warm sands around her.

Asralyn again began scooping sand, and soon had piled up a nice mound of it covering Jalaran's belly and chest. That done, he breathed a gentle flame onto the top of the mound, so that its heat would radiate gently through the sand. It was much the same thing queens did to keep their eggs warm.
He settled down alongside her again, and used the tip of his nose to nuzzle along her neck. <Now, tell me this *doesn't* feel like being at a warm, sunny beach!> he said smugly, giving the tip of her nose a quick lick. <Are you relaxed now?> Hopefully this was keeping her sufficiently occupied to keep her mind off of the number of candidates.

Jalaran relaxed, listening to Asralyn talk to her...her eys closed in a calming and serene effect, as he continued to scoop the sand on her then breathing and warming it, much like she did with the eggs.
As he settled next to her, the tip of his nose nuzzling her neck as he spoke...she remained with her eyes closed, {Yes...very much so...I find it relaxing...thank you Asralyn!} she replied.

Asralyn stretched himself out alongside the reclining queen, and and again began to softly make his sound like waves breaking on the surf. <Hear the ocean?> he asked Jala.
As he continued to make the soothing sound, he mentally practiced the things he would say once he was sure she was sufficiently relaxed and mellow. Hm, he could say that Jesseret had never failed to fill his quota...no, he'd already said that. Er, he could say that...Jesseret was impeccably honest, and would *never* try to make the queen think he had enough searchlings if he really didn't...no, he didn't even believe that on himself, and it was a sure bet Jalaran wouldn't. Or maybe....
He didn't realize that his 'soothing sounds' were even more soothing than he'd thought. His eyes closed, and the sounds he was making in the queen's ear begain to sound suspiciously like snores. Very loud snores...

As Asralyn made the sounds of the ocean, Jallaran began relaxing even more, under her blanket of sand. {Yes...very much so.} she replied as his sounds of the waves continued.
She opened one eye to look at Asralyn as his ocean sounds suddenly began sounding more and more like very loud snores. She watched him curiously, then closed her eye once more, snuggling closer to the sleeping Asralyn.

Asralyn opened his eyes a few moments later and yawned, then shook himself and wondered how long he'd been asleep. Jala looked like she was asleep as well, and he didn't want to disturb her. Still, he realized with a pang of conscience that the eggs needed to be guarded. Since he didn't want to disturb Jala, there was only one thing to do.
He silently...well, as silently as a dragon can...got up and crept over to the eggs. Moving gingerly, he positioned himself in their midst in the place where Jalaran had been. He smiled to himself...being here made him feel very...important.
<Um, hello,> he said softly, knowing that queens spoke to their eggs in the hatching cavern. <You don't know me, but I am sure that your dam has spoken of me. I am your sire, and I am sure that I can teach you many useful things...>

Day 1
Late Morning
Jalaran was soon, sound asleep...dreaming of the sandy beach, the waves crashing upon the rocks...and she basking in the sun, atop the warm sands. She was completely, unaware of Asralyn moving away from her, and over to her eggs.
She dreamed on, as he spoke to the little ones, resting comfortably inside their shells.
The sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks were soothing to her. In her dream, she rose from the warm sands, moving her great bulk into the cooling water's of the ocean. She splashed around, enjoying the feel of it...then returned to the warm sands to bask in the sun and dry her scales in the sun.

Asralyn kept an eye on the peacefully-sleeping queen, while at the same time appraising his offspring-to-be. <You are certainly a fine looking group of eggs!> he told them. He was only a little surprised to get a response - not anything really understandable as words, but more like feelings. One little egg, for example, seemed perplexed by the fact that it's parent's mindvoice had suddenly changed. Another almost preened at the compliment, and he sensed curiosity as to whether the questioner's egg was the best looking?
Asralyn smiled, and wisely refrained from anything that would get him in trouble when Jala took back her post here. He gently blew out a flame over the sands, close to the eggs without being *too* close, to keep them nice and warm. He felt a quiet surge of appreciation from the eggs, whose occupants loved the warmth.
He cast an eye back over at Jalaran, to see if she still appeared to be resting.

Day 1
Afternoon
Jalaran slumbered while Asralyn had taken up her post with watching over the eggs. She still dreamed of that beach, when suddenly she woke, opening one eye only partially, and watching Asralyn curiously as he lay in her normal spot among the eggs.
She watched warily, as he blew on the sands to warm them the same as she had done herself.
She closed her eye, when he started to turn his head toward her, to see if she still was asleep. Then opened it again, slightly to watch proudly at how well he was doing. She was relieved to have a break...even though it was a small one.

Asralyn surveyed the eggs, sensing the unspoken thoughts and questions they were directing at him. Some felt that he was heating the sand a bit too much. Others thought he wasn't heating it enough. Some felt it was time for them to be turned to ensure even heating...others did not. Asralyn rolled his eyes, wondering how Jalaran managed to keep them all happy at any one time!
He gave them a bit more heat to ensure that they stayed warm enough, then crept silently over to where Jala lay. He peered down at the upside-down queen. He cocked his head and brought his nose down close to her, trying to figure out whether she was awake. He didn't want to wake her if she was still asleep.

Jalaran lay, eyes closed as Asralyn returned to her side. When his snout came down close to hers, trying to see if she was asleep.
She waited for a few moments, then suddenly she spoke to him, while her eyes were still closed. {Did you have a nice time with your offsprings?} she asked in hopes to startle him. She then opened her eyes and stared at him.
{Not so easy...is it?} she asked him, as she stood and shook the sand from her, stretching a bit. She then reached out and touched her snout with his.

Ok this thread is being closed as is all others...with the exception of the one in my office, the one in the lake and the one at the Stables! This is due to the fact that a time jump is about to take place...which means we will jump forward in time to the day of the hatching. So all posts started after the hatching post has been started, will be just that. Searchlings will then be joined to their new dragons...so all others will post as if they have their dragons or rather assume that. Those three threads that will stay open for the time being will remain as is...no one will assume the Searchlings have their dragons yet...it will be as if the Time Jump never affected those threads.
