Sylvia continued to pack, haphazardly stuffing clothing into a bag, as she argued with her mother.
"I am old enough to be a searchling, so I am going." She didn't look up when she heard the same argument she'd heard for the last several days since she had turned 16.
"But you already have a room here. The Searchling Barracks are for newcomers." Vignette stated, though she didn't move to stop her daughter from packing.
"How can I be a normal dragonrider if I don't go through the same experiences as other normal dragonriders do?"
Vignette hid a smile behind her daughter's back, but continued to argue, "Well, if you leave, do not expect me to open my door to you any old time you feel like coming in!"
"Mom!" Sylvia sounded exasperated. "It isn't like I'm ever here anyway!"
Vignette had to agree. Sylvia usually ate in the Dining Hall and only came home to sleep at night, and had been doing this for about a year already. Yet... she still didn't want to see her "baby" girl go out on her own. Not yet. But she had used all her arguments and Sylvia was technically old enough.
Sylvia turned and caught the smile her mother had been hiding, and laughed.
"You know where to find me..." Vignette said, softly.
Sylvia rushed forward as Vignette opened her arms, and the two embraced.
"I love you, Syl."
"Love you, too, Mom." She mumbled and pulled away, slightly embarrassed. She hurried to the bed and slung the bag onto her shoulder. "Gotta go..."
Vignette stood at the door and watched as Sylvia, with her red hair swinging, strode across the green toward the Searchling Barracks.
