I know everyone is applauding Platinum Dunes for the incredible work they've done on Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. But what I've noticed is that this production company is caught in a rut. The thing is that almost every film they have put out so far is a rewriting of a classic horror film from the 70s and 80s. In almost every case I've scatched my head and asked the obvious question: Why?
Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly approve of what they've done with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The two films are excellent in both scripting and execution. But the thing we have to remember with TCM is that most of the so-called sequals have been basically a retelling of Tobe Hooper's original film. I can honestly say the only one of the films I considered a real sequal up until “The Beginning” was Tobe's Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
But in the case of Platinum Dunes they went totally wrong with their rewriting of The Amityville Horror. I mean the story is supposed (though I doubt it) to be based on a true story. But in the case of Platinum Dunes they threw the original material out the door and changed nearly everything to the point that it bares little resemblance to what it is supposed to be. The result was that they create a film that was not only a redo, but also an insult to the original source material.
What is worse is that it appears this production company plans only produce redoes of classics. We all know about their plans, though there are rumors that this has been cancelled, to do a rewrite of the iconic slasher series Friday the 13th. Also, it has been mentioned that they are also planning redoes of Evil Dead (without the talents of Bruce Campbell) and the classic vampire film Near Dark.  What's next? Will we see Platinum Dunes doing a total rewrite of A Nightmare on Elm Street (of course without Robert Englund)? Or Halloween? Or how about Phantasm? When will this stop? When will this company realized that a classic is a classic and shouldn't be messed with.
Also, given this company's production quality, and potential, it's a shame that they don't thrill the horror fans with something original rather than rewriting the past...
