I understand that both Stephen King and North Korean leader (and huge cinephile) Kim Jong Il love this movie. Betsy Palmer is just terrific as Pamela Voorhees. I give her a lot of credit for pulling her all into it, since she initially hated the script and the role (she's come to embrace it since then) and because it was so different from all her previous work. I also dig the performances of Adrienne King, Walt Gorney (Crazy Ralph shouldn't have been killed off in Part 2; he should have been in EVERY F13 movie!), and Ari Lehman. Even Debbie Hayes shines in the very small role of Claudette, the female counselor whom Pamela kills in 1958. Debbie's face in ECU at the end of the prologue is priceless.
I also like all the shots of the full moon juxtaposed with the counselors' singing in the prologue, as well as the subsequent moon shots. I just have one major complaint about the original F13: the killing of the snake. I would have no problem with this if it had been fake, like all the other deaths. But it wasn't. They ACTUALLY killed the poor snake. I'm sorry, but what the hell did that snake ever do to them? They could easily have used a fake snake for the death shot or, since this scene doesn't add jack to the plot, not done the scene at all. (After all, it wasn't in the original script.)
Other than that, and despite some cheesy elements, F13 Part 1 deserves its status as a modern classic. |

Cory Steven's professor from film school knew Betsy Palmer and asked her if she would be willing to do the voice of Mrs. Voorhees in Mother's Day. Betsy said she never wanted to play Mrs. Voorhees again. That is also why they had to recast the part for FREDDY VS JASON....
Amusingly enough, when I wrote The Mask of Jason Voorhees I changed the names of the two counselors killed at the beginning. Unfortunately, I hadn't realized that had been named in the original film.
And, it really did suck about the snake..... _________________ T.T.F.N.

I understand, too, that Sean Cunningham, Adam Marcus et al. had planned to have Mrs. Voorhees in JASON GOES TO HELL, but that they cut her out after Betsy Palmer declined to reprise the role. As for the names of the counselors, they're easy to miss. They are named in the credits, but I don't remember their names being used on-screen (and I've seen the film several times). |
