Donnell Floyd.....
Hey everyone...this Calvin Ruffin II. I wrote this blog to demonstrate something....we recently started a segment of my magazine called The Go-Go Roundtable. Our first "feature" was Familiar Faces a band with thier own distinctive sound...lead by former Rare Essence Saxophonist Donnell Floyd. I, having never actually met Donnell was very excited because the band has a great "mixture" of the various genres of music..jazz..rock...r&b ect....
When I told brothas I had Familiar faces as the first guest for my Roundtable....what do you think they said?...I quote.."Donnell Floyd is a butthole"..."Man nem niggas dis...dat...and so forth". No need to mention names cause when they read this they know who they are. Now check this...when I met him right...all I saw was an artist...a dude focused on his shit..the quality of it. Also a man "disciplined" enough to be opininated...I said to myself riggggghhht how can any of us "perfect" our craft and continue to grow as artists if we dont "demand" excellance. The man new his stuff period....so the lesson I want to share is this...hey DC...how in the fuck did you ever think you were gonna move worldwide as an official genre of music when you do this to each other right here at home time and time again? Donnell aint the first musical genius of ours to keep gettin stabbed in the back by hate and he wont be the last....but guess what if we dont stop this bullshit our wonderful culture gonna always get "raped" by the industry and she aint never gonna get a dime....so think about it as you go to these Go-Go awards...why is our shit still local?..why we aint on VH1?.....will we ever be?...its up to us... and please man..dont compare us to New York because they dont put "shit" on the names of thier "Legends"...they force you to respect the people who paved the way for them!!! The DCdrama Magazine gonna make sure our voices are heard. peace and blessings... _________________

I totally agree with this author. Donnell Floyd and Familar Faces are musical genuises. People only hate when they can't compete. The Familiar Faces Band, in my opinion, has been a long time coming. Where else can you go and experience Jazz (real musicians), Pop, R&B, Reggae (yup) and GoGo in one sitting/show?Or should I say where can you go and here good ORIGINAL music being played by folks you grew up with, people who don't mind coming out into the community for a game of basketball, or just great, wholesome, well groomed people. I'm not trying to grab nuts either! I know more than half the of the band members personally and I know that their success did not come over night. Great success starts with great people with minds that think alike and unfortunately the hate in the minds of our own people/competitors are keeping us all from moving away from the local area. Believe it or not, I have a sneaky suspicion that Donnell Floyd and Familiar Faces are just the organization to take us where we need to be. Donnell you are a genuis and with all the experts behind you, I pray that you all can remain on one accord, see through the differences whenever they arise, and press forward to be the best you're destined to be. Ms. Shawn !!! One more thang, Derrick you tore that Solo up last night at Phish Tea!! Luv Yall _________________ 2006 is MINE!! |

The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.
To D. Floyd and the Familiar Faces band members, you guys are long over due. Something new, original and for grown folks.
I came out to tradewinds last night, have not been out in years, and my experience was phenomenal. I could actually say excuse me and get pass someone and have them say in kind "brother it's cool". Absolutely amazing, total family like experience, and lots of love. This is what a party/celebration should be each time. And you guys cranked like shyt.
As an old head, DFloyd I congratulate you and the members of your team on the long journey, accomplishments now and in the future.
Much respect and love to you guys.
Peace |
