· Quote

I've been up toon the past two Saturdays - the first time in ages - and I was taken aback by the number of people begging in the city centre. I know there's always been the odd one along Princes Street (usually with some dog) but these appeared to be people of Eastern European or Asian appearance and is many cases women. Is it just cos I've been away from the city centre for a while that I've not been aware of this increase or is there a problem?

My perception matches yours, Edna.  I am in the centre at least once or twice a month and in Portobella/Piershill daily.  Until a year ago I had only ever seen two women Big Issue sellers, clearly indigenous.  I had only seen a handful of women begging Edinburgh centre.  I feel that in the last 6-9 months there's been a rapid multiplication of women beggars and Big Issue sellers and many do appear to be of East European origin.  I don't understand why it's now - the rise in such women at Elephant and Castle and South London was the late 90's.  Why are they so far North now?  I don't know.

I like to buy Big Issue but I have regular sellers I buy from so I have no answers for you.

I've noticed the same thing, I wonder why there are more, and from foreign places.

Well, it doesn't seem to be confined to Edinburgh. I spotted a wee foreign wifey sitting begging outside Greggs in Dalkeith at lunchtime today.

My friend saw the lady that sits in Newington being picked up at the end of the afternoon by someone in a car. And I've been told a lot of them are buying big issues off sellers and then selling them on. I also recently saw a guy begging on Princes St using a mobile phone...lol
