It's allmost time for the Annual Carnethy Hill Race, this years event is taking place on the 16th of Feb. Where have all the Penicuik Men gone?
There is only half a dozen of us doing it this year and five of us are over 40. It.s the same for the race in general 90% of the runners are over 40,
at this rate in 20 years time will there still be a hill race? |

Well, that's very sad.
I confess that I've never felt inclined to take part or even just go to spectate....... (And these days, even just spectatin'd proably kill me!) But I hadn't realised that another wee local tradition was starting to die.
Oh, it's a shame naebdy fae the Advertiser ever reads this forum...... Maybe they could still ginger-up a wee bit o' interest before the 16th.
What's the closing date for entrants? |

I used to know a couple of "youngsters" (now just either side of the magic Forty) who did the Hill Race, but they've moved away from Penicuik - as young people so often have to do. |

Don't get me wrong, the race limit of 550 was reached by the second week in January. Most of the runners hail from outside Midlothian,
with a big contingent from south of the border, but with most of them being over 40 who knows what will happen in the future. |

I ran in the very first race, long before all these fantoosh fancy folk came in and nicked it. In fact I got a prize, a shepherds crook for being last! I think I prefer walking and climbing. _________________ Forum Expert (esoteric musical instrument division)

You came last! I have this picture of you as super-fit. You have become my hero. (Spry and Soup, you can stop fighting now!) I could never run in anything. You can not imagine the hope for general fitness and well being that you give me by owning up to that. Please accept some smiles.
From another person who could never run fast. _________________

Oh Spry, I didn't mean to make you feel like that. Look at it another way. Where would the fun be in running after a woman who just can't run? _________________

Ah, never mind, Spry - you've still got your pole-dancing equipment there, I see. |

At my age, that would be great fun, Wen!
And as for you, Mouse, just lay off my pole will you! _________________

Well, Davie, in case you don't have time to pop in tomorrow, I'd like to wish you all the best for Saturday and I hope the conditions are good.
I believe that the race now covers five hills. What are they? _________________
