Here's a thing.  Like a lot of folk I used to wonder how The Square in Penicuik got its name when it's really a triangle.

Here's a detail from a map of 1892.  According to this, the name covers BOTH sides of Bridge Street and that area is roughly a square in shape.

Like I said, there's a thing.  All right ----- it's an idiotic thing but it's still a thing!

Efterthought -------

Before Bridge Street was made as the way out of Penicuik and you had to come down roughly where Croft Street is now and then swing round to the bridge, I wonder if The Square wasn't bisected?

I once posted an old map showing that route.  Wonder if I can still find it.  Back to that damned attic again!

Your aerial photo of Valleyfield Mill gives a good view of the area, and certainly suggests an original square arrangement. Take away the newer houses nearest you as you look at it - they've been built at the wrong angle.

There's also this map from 1858 - The Square is right down down in the bottom left hand corner, but you should be able to find it.

If I could remember where I recycled that one from, I'd go back and get a bit more of the map further to the South-West. It might have been useful for some other Forum discussions!

Right!  They both show a kind of square and the map confirms the name as applying to BOTH sides of Bridge Street.

(I don't suppose ------ no, we couldn't ------ or could we ------ have missed a wee nameplate on the other side of the road identifying that area as part of The Square?  NO!  Not after all those years living in Penicuik!).

There's an older map pre-Bridge Street that also shows the area to the south-west.  I've got it somewhere.  I either posted it on the Forum or sent it to Dingle.

No, I haven't been totally unobservant ------ there isn't a nameplate.

The bit opposite might not "need" an address, because it's mainly used nowadays for turning and deliveries, I should think. I wonder if the postcode directory would offer a name?

Right - it lists the following addresses:

Alexanders - 24 The Square
Ben's Store - 27 The Square
Dental Surgery - 21 The Square
Joe's Shu Bar - 25 The Square
17/1 The Square
23/1 The Square
17/2 The Square
23/2 The Square
17/3 The Square
2-4 The Square
23/4 The Square
10 The Square  (EH26 8LH)
11 The Square
12 The Square
13 The Square
14 The Square
15 The Square
16 The Square
18 The Square
19 The Square
20 The Square
26 The Square
28 The Square  (EH26 8LH)

Looking first at the named businesses, it would appear that the numbering was done in order around the square - not in the odd-side and even-side that we take as the norm nowadays. That said, there are clearly some numbers missing. What happened to numbers 5-9? Were they perhaps removed to make way for the road to go straight through?

We now have this:

1 missing
2-4 present
5-9 missing
10-16 present
17 divided into three
18-20 present
21 present, dentist
22 missing
23 divided into four - part 3 missing
24 present, Alexander's
25 present, Joe's
26 present
27 present, Ben's
28 present

I don't know what this proves, but it does look as though the main gap may be at the top (High Street) end, assuming the numbers went round the "circle" of buildings in the original Square.

Where only a single number is missing it may well be a case of two being merged.

What used to be Thorburn Terrace is still there (maybe that's still the address of the 'replacement' houses) and there are houses set farther back that maybe front on to Croft Street and have that address, so maybe you're right, Anona ------ there's nothing left to name (the newsagents in what used to be the grain store could simply have a Bridge Street address).

Thorburn Terrace is EH26 8LZ - which suggests it's part of the same street, I think.

But it's possible the whole thing is considered to be part of Bridge Street for postcode purposes.

Just checked - the big end of Bridge Street is EH26 8LN, so it looks as though it's all in one in postcode-speak.

P.S. Just in case you don't spot it - I added a chunk to my previous post while you were writing your reply, Spry. Very boring stuff about postcodes.

That list is interesting, Anona.  It could well be that the missing numbers were for houses that were demolished to make Bridge Street a through road (provided these houses are older than Bridge Street).  Nice bit of detective work!

I've had a good rake in the dreaded attic but I'm damned if I can find that pre-Bridge Street map.  The houses were shaded in so it would have been possible to tell if they weren't the existing houses.

Lovely to see you back, TattieB! Unfortunately though I won't be able to tell you what young Spry has been up to in your absence. He's paying me good money to keep it all under wraps . . .
