There is Absolutely No Truth in the rumour that, in one of my previous lives, I was a Jack Russell Terrier.

You've put in a lot of effort there, Anona, and uncovered a lot of interesting stuff.  However, as far as Dingle's carving is concerned, he says it can be seen from the back of the Crown and that is at the other side of the High Street from either the Co-op or the Railway Tavern.

Yes, well, I don't remember which pub is which, either!

I did have another thought, when I was twiddling my thumbs last night because my computer had blown up (that's another story . . . ) - the Kirk has an emblem which could possibly be "It" - a burning bush, is it?

Anyway, one of Alex Cowan's buddies was Thomas Chalmers, who was a leader in the Disruption of the Church of Scotland, and who used Valleyfield House as a holiday home, apparently. Maybe it was him who put the carving there, for followers of his Underground Movement?

On the other hand, maybe it was just somebody messing about who couldn't write his name!

No, really, we do need that photo. Get rid of that scaffolding, please, somebody!

I managed to nip into the Crow Inn for a pint on Saturday night, and i
had a look at the map above the fireplace. It clearly shows a field called
Cornbank. I had a wee look at The Annals  Of Penicuik. page 34,
it seems to be that there were two Cornbank's, the one on the map was
AKA Cairnbank.

Cairnbank?  That has a familiar ring to it.   The lodge house on Bridge St that you pass if you're heading for the Estate was for Bank House and the big old house on the right after that is Cairn -something is it not?  Maybe Cairnbank?   That would be roughly the area shown on the map.

Isn't there a street down that way now called Cairnbank something - Terrace, or Gardens? Part of the same estate as St James' Gardens / View?

That would suggest a link to an old farm or field name.
