Alistair Darling’s first budget – he’s taxed a bit, borrowed a bit and given a bit to the poor. At the same time it’s given him an opportunistic facility for hitting drivers of heavy polluting cars, and drinkers. Indeed if you don’t drink or drive you’re unlikely to be worse off tonight. As for the state of the national economy, the chancellor is forecasting a tad less growth than previously forecast, at just under 2 per cent. That does compare favourably with many other European countries. Government borrowing though is set to jump steeply. The Tories have declared the British economy a disaster zone and effectively accused both Mr Brown and Mr Darling as steering the British economy onto the rocks by borrowing too much, spending too much and failing to provide for the hard times ahead
So do you drive a gas guzzler, is the price ofyour booze going to make you think about brewing your own www.blacktable.com/gillin030901.htm _________________ This Life ? |

I guess everyone is a teetotal public transport using non smoker, so the budget won't (directly) affect them. _________________ 'S riogal mo dhream

Up here those of us who have to drive either for work or because we live in the back of beyond have no choice - we're used to lumping it.
But personally, I don't drive, don't smoke, hardly ever drink, and my kids have grown up and moved out. The house is paid for, and so is the cat.
Short of having half a dozen more kids, there's not a lot in that budget that affects me really. |

I prefer to use public transport but walk where I can and drive if I have to. I like the odd couple of cans of cider at the weekend, but I do smoke.
What I really object to is the political spin used now. The Excise have been smashing stills and charging tax on booze for a few hundred years. Taxing booze is a long way from new. I don't remember Dennis Healey or Norman Lamont having to claim it was for our own good! I expect them to raise taxes - just do what you do! - I'll only get upset if you insist on telling me your lies.

My dad was a heavy smoker but he had great will power ---- he stopped at least fifteen times. The time he showed greatest determination was when Stafford Cripps put them (the fags) up to about 1/6 for twenty (what's that -- seven and a half pence?).
He lasted for five days on that occasion. _________________

Before I had quit for good, I once quit for three weeks cold turkey wife ended up throwing a packet of fags at me "here smoke these" as I was such a cantankerous bas*&^% not smoking. Have since given up (4 years now) using patches. _________________ 'S riogal mo dhream
