· Quote

THIS Sunday Peebles is all set to bin the litter.

The Community Council is coordinating volunteers from various groups and locals in a project to tidy up and enhance the town.

Groups of volunteers will take particular routes or areas in and around Peebles paths, riverbanks, parkland, hillsides, road verges and will pick up litter, bagging it for collection.

Ian Wilson from Peebles and District Community Council said: “In previous years many hands have made light work of a very worthwhile task, so come along and do your bit for Peebles.”

The project will last between two and three hours, starting at 9.45 a.m. at Kingsmeadows car park, where litter-pickers and rubbish bags will be handed out.

Some gloves will be available, and high-visibility tabards will be issued to teams working on roadside verges.

For more information just call Jim Waldie on 01721 722692 or Ian Wilson on 01721 720042.

Oh, is it this weekend? I remember seeing something about it at another forum a few months back, but I haven't seen it mentioned since.

I'll see if I can find the details, time etc.

I know it's silly, Anona, but I wouldn't go to the Penicuik one because that man was rude and horrid to Sooz, who has always been a sweet, kind person on the forums.  I know that Beeslack Woods needs clearing, but there's plenty other to be done to help Penicuik.

Were he ever man enough to apologize to her for his rudeness I'd happily go.

I do know what you mean, Wen - and I don't believe the person concerned could ever see that any wrong had been done, that was the trouble.

But as far as any clean-up goes, I think in some cases there's more good to be done by getting supermarkets and schools involved, since the bulk of the rubbish seems to come from their direction.

Not always, of course!

Well, Anona, He should know what he did wrong.  This is 2008, not 1968.

I won't write any more on this after this post.

The environment was a bullying one.  I wasn't wholly in agreement with Sooz, but her comments were serious.  He repeatedly patronised and trivialised her by calling her 'Nursey'.  He totally undermined her.  It was horrible to watch.  The main administrator did nothing to stop it.  When someone else tried to, that individual was challenged.

The organiser is now accepted  as a jolly good chap by the Penicuik Mafia (those who believe they are our community leaders), of both sides of that dispute.  Sooz, as she has expressed on this forum, was left feeling very hurt and put down.

Other women (including me and Sue) were given a hard time there, and it seemed to be for daring to speak.  And it all seemed to be thought OK.  No!!!!  While anyone in Penicuik chooses to run under absolute male supremacism and bullying they can do it without me.

As a final note.  Several of us, mostly women, opposed the bullying of a Ladywood campaigner.  Because of that he wrote of their attemps to set up a Sports Centre with grants.  Because of that Bob McDonald and MDM made the initial moves for the Sports Foundation.  Because of that there is a Ladywood Sports Foundation, which I believe is a real asset to Penicuik.  All of us who stood against bullying and for listening a little should be proud of ourselves - Ladywood is an example of where listening and humanity can get you.

Sorry to go on so long but I'm proud of us, girls, we made the opening for the most significant community contribution to Penicuik right now.  And Edna/Min is a notable absence from this.  I won't denigrate what those blokes do in their projects but it pales by comparison and doesn't quite match all the visions and fine words that they use.

I'll end here.  Girls - including Sooz - I'm proud of us!!!

This topic and tone is one of the reasons I stopped visiting the ""other forum"" I dont really care about what he said, she said or personal egos or name calling but I do admire folks of either sex who are prepared to clean up the community or contribute their energy and passions in getting funding for community assets such as Ladywood. OK, some folks have no social skill and can offend some folks, but lets not lose sight of their passion for getting some positive things done. Discouraging folks not to participate in a clean up is not in good spirit.... get over the issues of individual personalities...helping the community surely is more important?

There are other places that could do with some Spring-cleaning, even if you don't want to join in with one particular group at one particular place.

And if you don't fancy the communal touch at all - and your own garden is looking its pristine best - I'm sure you could find a neighbour who could do with a hand.

So nobody with an itchy pair of rubber gloves need feel left out!

Im with you on starting with our own gardens or neighbours gardens . In our community here, when the kids leave Kindy or Primary school they are given a native tree sapling to plant in their own gardens to encourage them to look after nature and encourage the birds to stay in suburbia. The trees are supplied by the local plant centres. When babies are born the parents can collect a tree to plant in the local park, the council supply a wee plaque with the childs name on it to celebrate their new citizen. The kids also adopt a bit of space in the local parks where they clean up and paint out graffiti [a global scourge] The local supermarkets and businesses, Lions/Rotary cover the cost of any supplies [gloves/ rubbish bags etc] It works well..as all the kids have a stake in this and they become more responsible and take better pride in their community...woe betide any adult who is spotted throwing down litter!! or any of their mates who leave their signature tagged on a wall. The best kept spaces are rewarded with class certificates and sports equipment for their school.

That sounds like a really good scheme, TB.  The youngsters have a feeling of ownership and being a part of the environment, I would imagine.  That's the kind of scheme I might enjoy being part of.

I like the idea of planting a tree to celebrate a baby, but I'd always thought of it as a family thing. Giving the tree - and baby - a part in the community is a brilliant idea.

I planted a tree as a Christmas present last year, and I may well plant a few more before this year is out. I hope they'll last a bit longer than the bath salts - and it saves so much time on the wrapping!

I think that sounds like a brilliant scheme, TattieBogle, and it's a pity we don't have something like that here.

Talking of cleaning up, is that a local authority cowp that now defaces the area where the Old Manse and Bridgend Church used to be, at Eskbridge.

We passed that way today and there was litter blowing everywhere.   It must be an eyesore to the folk across the river at Eskvale.
