A while back there was a thread about this place. I got a great book "Lost Edinburgh" by Hamish Coghill and he has this to say -----
(Firstly, he talks about the way in which developers buy an old mansion, demolish it and build blocks of flats)

Yes, I remember The Pagoda - and I agree with the writer! It was a crime to knock it down and build an enormous matchbox in its place.
Oddly enough I went on to marry a man who has a few Gowanses hanging about on the upper branches of his family tree. Wonder if he had any claim on the house . . . and if he could sue the demolishers? |

pretty Rockville... i would LOVE to live in a house like that with my children Wednesday, Puglsey and dear husband Gomez )
But seriously - i think those buildings are fantastic and better than the souless crap you get now... _________________ You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. |

I would also love to live in a house like that. I can't believe they actually allowed it to be demolished and replaced with something so soulless.
I'm lucky enough to live in a Victorian house with many of its original features, (deep skirting boards, cornices, etc etc) and although there are times when the convenience of a modern house does have its appeal, I really wouldn't want to live in today's identikit shoeboxes (never mind actually affording to buy one of them in the first place!)
I much prefer houses with a bit of character. |

i live in Victorian property but not a lot of nice old features left (it appears that Mr 7 Mrs Artex lived there in the mid 80s and went mental - didnt stop at the ceiling- NO! some walls got a lovely meriangue coating too...
Luckily Mr moo took off the plastic skirting boards and replaced with old timber and mouldings being thrown out to re-instate at least one nice feature
i wonder how many beers i need ti lpy him with til i convice him that window shutters would look great .....
I find it sad when old properties are bought up and "ikea'd " to the max - dont get me wrong- a lot of peoples house look fab with that furniture in it- but i have heard what horrible things get done to original fittings, stained glass and cornicing....(although i have great fun raiding skips infront of old buildings bought by them rich folks!
I think somewhere at work i have photos of the interior of rockville
It reminds me of a cool old house that was on that renovation programme called Strawberry Hill (looked grand but a lot of the fancy stuff was made of paper mache!)
Although i have no need for so many coat hooks when all my clothes are hung neatly on the floor _________________ You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. |

I don't really see the point in buying an old property with its original period features if, as moo says, you're only going to "ikea" it. Nothing wrong with ikea per se, but if that's what you're going to do, why not just buy a modern house which suits that whole style and concept? |

I'd love an old place with character, but I think this old-ish place with not much character but a view of the hills will have to do!
I've always fancied living in an old railway station, though. Big rooms, high ceilings, loads of windows - and a fantastic size of garden.
A lighthouse would have its interest, too - it would be a bit different. All those stairs would be very good for the figure, and the views would be amazing. Not sure I fancy trying to carpet and furnish the round rooms, mind. |
