This is a blatant advert!

Rolling Eyes

I mentioned elsewhere that I'd been watching a video the other day when something important happened here. It's really rather a good video - or series of short films, all on one disc - and if you have an interest in Scottish history of around seventy to a hundred years ago, I think you'd enjoy The Island Tapes.

We got our copy from Coda Music - that place on The Mound. As the title suggests, the films are mainly concerned with life on the islands - St Kilda, Harris, Skye, Orkney - but it also covers the Scots who emigrated across the Pond within living memory, and the narration is provided by people who remember the places and events in the films.

The music is new, and forms a surprisingly pleasing background to the silent films. If you're interested, the details follow:

Celtic Music / Scottish Archive Film Cd And Dvd
Island Tapes

Track Listing

   * 1. ST KILDA - BRITAIN'S LONLIEST ISLE
   * 2. HOLIDAYING IN HARRIS
   * 3. CROFTING IN SKYE
   * 4. HANDBA' AT KIRKWALL
   * 5. DA MAKKIN O A KESHIE
   * 6. A NEW WAY TO A NEW WORLD
   * 7. NORMAN REMEMBERS
   * 8. HOLIDAYING IN HARRIS (RADIO EDIT)

(No, I'm not on commission! But the films are worth seeing.)

I thought at first this was all music of a kind that maybe wasn't my style but I see it's largely reminiscences.  I think I could enjoy that.

If the music really isn't to your taste, you can always turn the sound off and listen to the films silent as nature intended. But I didn't find it intrusive, and there is a fair amount of spoken commentary anyway.

It's quite an eye-opener when you see just how much the world has changed within living living memory. One of the films shows a crofter making a basket to fetch the peat in. Just that: it takes him much of the day, and he ends the day by using it to get the peat for the evening's fire.

Can you imagine anybody spending a whole day on that nowadays?
