I am afraid Penicuik HAS always been like this but I've only lived here 50 years. When I went to school I was assaulted every day , no attacked every day,at school and on my way home by someone who is regarded as a pillar of society today. There is no community here nothing just a whole lot of individual bits with no continuity what so ever. Yes everywhere has become similar but some are not quite so similar, fortunately. _________________ Forum Expert (esoteric musical instrument division)

You must have come here from a gentler place than I did, Ben. I came to Penicuik a little over 50 years ago, after several nomadic years of never staying anywhere long - living sometimes in cities and sometimes in a place where a man could be brutally done to death by his own farm workers. (He was our next-door neighbour, as it happened.)
Penicuik was, quite literally, a breath of fresh air to us. We had a new house, green fields fore and aft, (relative) peace and quiet - and a place to settle and put down some much-needed roots for the first time.
I know Penicuik is not perfect - but is anywhere, honestly? It may well not be the best place in Scotland to live, but it certainly isn't the worst. |

That is very true, Anona - I can certainly think of worse places, and many of them not all that far from Penicuik. A great deal of the time, it's what you make of a place that counts..... |

"VICE PREFECT"

I couldn't possibly comment - but the others have the simple "Prefect" on their badges . . .

Oh, absolutely - the soul of discretion, that's me.
Anyway, Spry is bigger than I am.

Hmmm . . . I've been musing over all those sweet little boys posted up there by sweet big Spry . . . and I still think he's in the first one.
However there are two possibilities.
Towards the right is a wee boy holding up somebody's train, and looking to have an awfy red face at the sheer embarrassment of it all. That could easily be one of 'em, Spry or Hyde - whichever you fancy as the shy one.
However a bit ahead of him there is a cluster of children, led by two bigger girls holding hands, with some smaller kids behind them. One is a pretty little blonde girl, who appears to be raising an arm to hide her blushes - because some rakish young feller-me-lad has been chatting her up.
I'll lay odds that that wee lad who is turning round to proposition her is our Spry!

You're right the second time, Anona ------ and I wasn't propositioning her! I was merely suggesting that if she felt a wee bit weary (walking all the way from Southbank) I knew of a shortcut through the Craw Wood. _________________

There were quite a few "wee" galas at that time.
Harpers Brae where the crowning was held in the gardens of Southbank House which lay between the present Southbank (lodge) House and Howgate Cottage (known as Boghead in those days).
Kirkhill The crowning and the sports were on the football pitch behind Kirkhill School (old YMCA).
Shottstown The events were held on Shottstown Green (on the Penicuik side of the Miners' Institute. _________________

The advantage of little local galas would be that all the children could take a part - no rivalry because it was that other school providing the Queen and Herald this year, not yours, and plenty of room for all the wee ones to be flower-bearers.
Once it was split between Eastfield, Cuiken, the Sacred Heart and then Cornbank - well, it would take so long to come round to your turn again that there wouldn't be much point for a lot of the kids. |
