Noticed a reference to the "Penicuik U.F.S. Childrens Gala Day".
Does anyone know what UFS stood / stands for? |

The only thing that comes to mind is "United Friendly Societies" - but it was just the "Penicuik Children's Gala Day" in my day, I'd never heard it called anything else until the Hunter and Lass gazumped it.

I think Anona might be right, mad-dog. Like her, I knew it only as Penicuik Children's Gala Day but when I googled it, it seemed that ufs might have been used as far back as 1939 (when Friendly Societies were all the rage). _________________

I found a teeny-tiny pic of the Gala Queen's throne - can't get a decent-sized one though, sorry.
No, I haven't sat in it!
Scrappy refs, that don't go any further:
| Quote: |
Scran - Penicuik Gala Day chair
The Penicuik Gala Day chair was a gifted to the town by former residents in ... of Loanhead Children's Day Loanhead Children's Sports and Gala Day Association ...
scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?...&scache=3ln2v68ndu&searchdb=scran |
and
We need a tame SCRAN member to follow these up.
P.S.
Wikipedia needs a kick up the whatsit! This is the last bit of Wiki's page about Penicuik:
| Quote: |
| Perhaps the only person of notability to come from Penicuik is Gordon Grahame aka Lucky Jim who recorded the song "Your Lovely To Me" and even wrote a song "Listen To The Birds Sing" which mentions Penicuik in a perhaps less than favourable light " ink is bled and punk is dead and Penicuik's a dying town..." |
Have you ever heard of Penicuik's only famous person? I wonder if he writes for Wikipedia. |

Eh... it seems oor Gordy is a massive music star that passed us by:
http://www.myspace.com/luckyjimmusic
He certainly didn't have an easy time from the following comment I've read:
"I was born in Edinburgh but I actually grew up in a place called Penicuik about 10 miles away. It was quite pretty in parts but had a small town mentality and could be very rough."
When asked for his favourite records, he mentions 'Bat Out Of Hell' by Meat Loaf. Again, the Penicuik Tourist Office won't be too happy with his comment:
"I just got this again after hearing it on the radio. It was the first record I ever got and I got a real emotional jag when I heard it. It reminds me of getting out of Penicuik"
Gordon needs to be told that we don't take too kindly to unfair criticism and if things don't turn out well for him, I only hope he doesn't have to return as per the lyrics of the said song:
"Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven
Ill come crawling on back to you"
Ye neednay bother son.........
Thanks for the UFS info Anona. |

I just had a read of some of Gordy's autobiography on that page . . . what a nice chap he seems to be!!!
Oh well, Penicuik's loss is junkieland's gain.
I did think of editing and adding to that Wiki page, but you need an account for that. I'm surprised nobody else has offered any of Penicuik's finest, though. We do have a few.
I'll keep looking for the Gala history, though, mad-dog - I'm sure I've seen some more about the origins somewhere. |

I was watching the TV last night and an advert came on for Kingsmill bread. I knew I recognised the music that backed the advert and low and behold, after some research I've found out that the song playing was none other than "You're lovely to me" by Lucky Jim aka Gordon Grahame fi Penny!
He might not have enjoyed his time in Penicuik but congratulations to the man for writing such a fine tune and no doubt we'll be hearing more about him in the future.
But Gordon, if your watching pal, give Penicuik a break, because it may have just been you that was bringing out the worst in the town? |

They do say when you're looking to buy a house, you should always ask the present incumbent what the neighbours are like - and then ask the neighbours about him.
Apparently it can be quite illuminating. |

Who ever Gordon Grahame is/was he certainly had the right idea, the best thing about Penicuik is the road out, ANY road out. Always was and still is a horrible mess of violence, junkies and snobs. Fortunately I do know quite a few nice folk as well.
As for the high jacked gala day , now punter and prat , the only place to see a real gala day ( actually called the Jubilee by the older folk ) is Peebles Beltane week. _________________ Forum Expert (esoteric musical instrument division)

I too chose to take the road out of Penicuik but not because of the violence, junkies and snobs........ no, Penicuik was not always like that Ben..... unfortunatly Penicuik has sucumb , just like Peebles, Roslin, Bonnyrigg in fact most villages or towns in Scotland to places where respect for folks and property and community kinship has all but disappeared. so lets not disrespect the place where many of our forum members choose to stay. The road home may be littered with the scum of society but good friends, the pentlands, the history, family and old neighbours, locals who are trying to make a difference etc still make it a good place to go home to. _________________ Keep Youth in your heart and you'll never grow old |

It's really the info about the beginnings of the Gala we need, Moo, and the connection with UFS - but a photo or two might be nice, as long as it won't put you in the dole queue!
I would have liked one of the Queen's Throne - it's a long time since I saw it!
(Actually I did sit on it once, when we were having the photo shoot - but don't tell on me, will you?) |
