Bank Slated For Giving Kids Visa Cards
Monday, June 30 11:16 am
Lloyds-TSB has been criticised for sending debit cards to children as young as 11 so they can buy goods online without parents knowing.
A father has reportedly complained to the High Street bank after his 15-year-old son used his card to buy cheap cigarettes, Viagra and a fake adult ID online.
In the past, children aged 11 to 15 who hold current accounts were restricted to cards which could be used only in cash machines or at bank branches.
But the new cards are Visa-enabled, meaning they can be used anywhere that displays a Visa sign.
The bank posts the cards to youngsters without requiring the parents' consent.
Lloyds-TSB insists it is up to parents to keep a check on how children use the cards and says there are safeguards to ensure they cannot be used on adult websites.
The bank also claimed it was simply falling into line with its rivals.
It said: "In line with industry practice, we have started to offer customers under 16 the option to have a debit card. Importantly, we do incorporate restrictions which are unique to Lloyds TSB.
"The debit card does not allow customers' to go overdrawn and prevents purchases on websites with adult content or gambling sites.
"When we wrote to these customers we involved parents; including parental guides in initial correspondence and when the card arrives.
"The parent or guardian could request the card wasn't issued or at any time block it immediately if it is mis-used."
But LibDem Treasury spokesman Vince Cable accused the bank of trying to "seduce" customers at an early age. He said it was "clearly motivated by short-term greed".

Would your parents have trusted you with a credit or debit card at eleven?
Should they have done?
And what on Earth does a 15-year-old boy need Viagra for, anyway? |

This has me quite gobsmacked .....
I've just read the report on the BBC news web site...
Seems to be standard practice throughout the Banking World.. _________________ It's good to have a sense of humour .... |

It rather makes nonsense of the bank's claim that

Unless of course he was buying his tabs and his little blue pills from the kiddies' penny tray. |

I remember when I was 15 I had problems getting "it" to stay down (getting off a bus, standing up to answer questions in class, standing in the dinner queue etc. ) I did not need nor want to increase this problem with Viagra. I certainly wasn't alone with this "problem" (all 15 year old boys are horny little sods). _________________ 'S riogal mo dhream

Spry!!! Don't say that - I've got a 13-year-old son and I really don't want to have to cope with two horny teenagers in the house! Having just returned from Turkey, where a major attraction for his 17-year-old sister was the Turkish male totty, I've got quite enough to cope with at the moment, thank you very much indeed! I'll have no hair left at this rate...... |

I'd have been laughed off the putting green if I'd carried Viagra! _________________

Sue you have got a lot to look forward to. The mood swings, the not telling you what is going on (me and mine never talked to mum about "feelings") oh and the huffs' if you thought girls could be huffy wait till your teenage son discovers girls aren't just nasty "other people" what an eye opener. _________________ 'S riogal mo dhream

Oh dear.....he's already started with the huffiness, and the fact that he somehow managed to talk his dad into buying him a copy of FHM at the airport did ring alarm bells!
Maybe I should just go and lie down in a darkened room now - and not emerge for another 10 years or so! |

Once again, I have to say I am ever so glad I've never been a 15-year-old boy.
