· Quote

I have received an e-mail (several, actually) from FPB HQ about the adverts which, as regular readers will know, pay for us to have a free Forum.

As an experiment, the usual Yahoo! ads will not be appearing in the list of Topics, and you may notice a new type of adverts. All I can say is, if you don't like 'em, avoid letting your cursor touch the double-underlined words!

This is the e-mail, which may explain a little more fully what is going to happen.

Subject :  FreePowerBoards.com - New type of ad!

Hello!

We are excited to announce a new type of ad unit that is meant to be less obtrusive and more helpful!

This new type of ad is built into the content itself, so there are no unsightly ad units taking up your valuable forum space.

Before doing this test we polled users on our community forums
(http://www.freepowerboards.com/community) and over 60% of you wanted to either try something other than the old Yahoo ads we've had for well over a year, or they didn't care what we did. So... We gave it a shot!

We took ads off of EVERY board we host for a couple days while we did the ad test on our community boards ( you were helping us with feedback, we thought we'd return the favor ). So far, the results are certainly in favor of the new ad type. Below are the poll options and the percent of votes each received:

35% said:
"I love them! Much cleaner, even helpful at times!"

5% said:
"Certainly better than those stupid Yahoo ads."

5% said:
"I think I might like them better than the Yahoo ads."

11% said:
"It is something new. I'll get used to it I guess. Other than that I think I
might like it better than Yahoo ads."

35% said:
"Meh. An ad is ad, I don't really care what it is just keep hosting me Smile"

5% said:
"I think I like the Yahoo ads better."

0% said:
"I miss the Yahoo ads."

(This doesn't add up to 100% because some of the percents are rounded to the nearest percent)

As you can see an amazing 91% of you want us to either keep the new ads or you just don't care ( if only everyone was as easy going as those individuals Smile ) So.. we will be giving these new ads a shot!

You will notice green double underlined links on various pages that link to pages relating to the underlined word.

Users have found these to be both less annoying and at time even helpful!

We ask you be supportive and give these ads a shot, if you don't love them already. Many of the members who were first unsure of these new ads quickly began to warm up to them. Change is never easy but we really hope you enjoy the change as much as other members have!

Remember, we are an ad supported service so even though you might be thinking "Why have ads at all?" they are necessary to keep services like ours in tip-top shape.

We welcome you to share your thoughts and opinions on a thread dedicated to this topic - http://www.freepowerboards.com/community/community-about6496.html

Please post all questions/comments/concerns in the forums and not via direct email replies so others can see the answers too.

Thank you and have a great day!

P.S. You are bound to have a few members who do not like the new ads even if you find them to be an improvement. Everyone has a different taste and that is why we took so much care in polling our users.

P.P.S. If ads really aren't your thing, you will have the option to remove the ads for $4.95/month when we launch Version 3 of our services (date of release not yet set).

Yes, I did vote, before my recent connection problems - but see what you think yourselves. Any comments made to me will be passed on to HQ.

They're here, folks - I saw one a few minutes ago.

Unfortunately I couldn't possibly tell you what the chosen word was!

No doubt you will soon be able to see them with your very own eyes. You don't have to click, just let your cursor hover over the double-underlined word.

And marvel at the miracles of technology.

I decided it might be advisable to Split this Topic . . . you'll find the rest of it in a more appropriate place!

See you there!

Progress! I have now spotted three more trigger words for you all to avoid.

The words are:

hosting

email

family tree

Two of those appeared up above, just in case you don't see them underlined here.

Oh! And connection popped up just after I typed that.

Oh! Again - computer, on the Forums page. This is (suddenly) getting serious.

Yes - and they've taken off the old adverts altogether now.

This could become a new sport - Spot The Advert. Big Prizes for the best Twitcher.
