Local dialects are certainly disappearing, although there are some groups trying to preserve them where possible. Scots Tung is one organisation which is trying its best to promote and preserve the Scots language, although I suspect they may be fighting a losing battle....

Do you remember Billy Kay?   He was a great one for preserving the mither tongue and wrote a book with that very same title.

It's quite an academic book but some of his anecdotes are down to earth.    Like the interchangeability (God, is that a word) of the words 'how' and 'why' in the Borders.   When a teacher asked a class in Hawick how the Romans sowed seeds for their crops (answer being 'broadcast') the replies he got included "because they widnae have got any crops if they hidnae".

All the big stores had them, they were really high tech just after the war.  Places Like Binns, Pts , Peter Allans, J&R Allans , Bairds , Woolies, Frosts, Grants and probably loads more had the whooshy tubes. But where are all these firms now. All gone, well the name Woolworths still exists. Its quite funny looking back over the years to see how much everywhere has changed. Can you remember when assistants actually tried to help you?  Even all the local dialects have almost gone. Whats next, Scots ( the language) ?

Wow!  Some names from the past there Ben Ledi!      I remember when the old lady used to drag me and my brother into Edinburgh to Peter Allans(were they near the Bridges?)    Catch the bus at the Woodside Drive terminus(that'll probably be no more) always 10 minutes to the hour if I remember.     Was always nerve racking to see if the aul' bus would make it up Kirkhill brae!! Laughing     You are quite right in what you say, there always seemed to be plenty assistants to cater for customer's needs.    The old stores definitely had that 'Are You Being Served' air about them.   Then when a purchase was made......money into the little cannister........into the pipe and then 'WHOOSH' ...off it went.   In no time at all, there was a loud thump and your change had been sent back down from the cash office! Razz         GRANTS was another shop my old folks bought from.   A couple of old adverts from the time.........

No need to be sorry, Ben, I didn't expect him to speak thon way in real life.

Sometimes, I speak broad Scots, sometimes fairly pure English (but always with a strong Scottish accent!).   However, like Billy Kay, I don't want to see the 'mither tongue' disappear.

When I am at work I have to speak in Scots to most of my clients or they would not understand how I speak normally.  But, occasionally I have to speak very pukka to be understood.

I used to have a boyfriend with a very distinguished telephone voice. He used to call me sometimes at work and get all the girls drooling.

He also had some of them convinced that he was a Secret Agent . . .

Yes, folks, I used to go out with James Bond! ( Laughing )

I was just thinking back, prior to the days of Tesco etc., where my Mum got the weekly shopping from.    The good old Penicuik Co-operative Society of course!      I remember she used to make out a 'list' and then toddle across to the wee  'store' just up from Baird's shop(The Mill?)    They would then make up her order and later that day,it would be delivered by a young chappie(I'm sure his name was Arthur Galloway)on one of those old bikes with the big 'basket' in front.

During the week,in the mid-fifties, I remember the horse drawn Co-op baker coming into Dick Terrace.   The horse probably knew the run inside out! Always remembered it's name was Jerry!  I also remember the 'frenzy' when it left a wee 'deposit in the street, when the keener gardeners in the neighbourhood used to rush out with a shovel and be chuffed that their prized roses were in for a treat!   As kids,we thought this was 'GROSS'!!! Laughing  Laughing     We also got rolls delivered by Lambs the baker(Can you picture that happening nowadays!) and milk delivered by the Co-op.   There was also a chap named Ramage, from Roslin I think, who had an old bus converted into a mobile shop, who came weekly.
Every night, there was a mad rush by all the kids in the street into their hooses, when a selection of ice cream vans hit the street....Philips,Tony's and Mr.Whippy spring to mind.   I think it worked oot at a 40% success rate, getting money oot yur Ma!!! Razz

I was walking past The Railway Tavern yesterday, Tues 18th Marsch and Arthur Galloway was standing at the door havin' a fag. "Hello Arthur" "Hello Bullit"

............Gee folks!    Ah hope ah'm nae borin' ye aw wi' this! Sad   Ma wee wife says nae tae overdae it!!! Crying or Very sad

I was interested in these adverts.  My Mum and Dad used to refer to our furniture as Utility furniture and they were the only people that I have heard refer to it as such.  They kept their Utility furniture until the early 80's when they moved.  Not bad, I think.

As for whooshy tubes - I had never seen one until I was 18 and living in Liverpool and they had one in Armay and Navy Stores on the corner of Lime Street and Exchange Street (don't know the proper road names), opposite the Adelphi.  Like all of you I thought it was great fun to watch.
