I haven't been out to Glencorse auld kirk since it was a semi-ruin. Somebody told me yesterday that it had been restored. Is this the case and who did it? |

The family who now live in Glencorse House also own the Kirk. They had it "done-up", put a roof back on, laid a new floor, for their daughter's wedding. I've had a peek through the window and hardly recognised the old ruin. It's even carpetted inside now.
I'm hoping the renovations didn't extend to the room below the bell tower. That's where WWII soldiers used to write their names and numbers on the wall. Vandals destroyed the plaster some years back, but it was still possible to see a few names there.
The kirk itself is locked up and the gate is padlocked, but I'm told thatit's still possible to get access if you ask nicely at the lodge. |

It sounds as if they've made a decent job of the restoration. I take it that apart from the new roof, they've left the exterior pretty much as it was?
I didn't know about the room below the bell tower. If they have kept it as it was, then at least it should be safe from further damage by vandals. |

There's now glass in the windows and doors in the door frames, but otherwise, the outside looks just the same. They didn't build on an extension or anything daft like that. |

Is it used now, apart from for family weddings? Do they rent it out for other people to have their special occasion photographs?
Or is it just a kind of (rather literal) folly? |

Dunno, but I'll try to find out.
When I last "accessed" the place, it was some time after the wedding but everything looked well maintained with its red carpet and pine pews all still in place: so maybe it is rented out for weddings and such from time to time. |

It would be nice to think of it being in use as a family chapel - but I don't suppose people do that kind of thing nowadays.
All right, I know, you pair of wicked heathens! But you don't have to be dreadfully pious to enjoy having a beautiful place where you can go for some peace, quiet and contemplation.
Renting it out would bring in a nice little income though, I should imagine. |

I'm an atheist, but the idea of a place of peace, quiet and contemplation sounds absolutely heavenly to me! |

Here's their website http://www.glencorsehouse.com with pictures in it.
Looks lovely and a really nice venue.
I used to play up there and getting chased off the land! _________________

we went for a visit couplke of years ago
had to lopu over wall - but lodge folk were very kind (we asked them before we tresspassed!) its really lovely - bit gothicy looking inside (only looked through the windows)
But seemed to have been done nice and they hadnt covered it with MDF or harled the outside (thank goodness...) _________________ You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. |

I have been researching my family tree over the past year, and discoverd
that my 4x and 3x Great Grandparents are buried in the old Kirkyard at Glencorse. Unfortunatley there are no stones to mark the graves. |

Sadly, many people in the past were too busy finding the money to feed their families to have anything to spare for a gravestone.
But if you know they are there, think of the kirk itself and the grounds as their memorial. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. |
