I came across this on another forum ---
"I had to bring this up after reading today that an 11 year-old girl is due to give birth soon. Are we lacking traditional values?
The girl of the mother was quoted as saying "I'm proud of my daughter for keeping the baby". Apparently the baby was conceived after 'a night out.' NIGHT OUT? What 11 year-old child goes on a night out? I wasn't allowed out of sight of my house at aged 11.
Have times just completely changed? Am I the only one who feels like I'm losing touch? Children seem to be more and more involved with alcohol, drugs, and crime at an earlier age.
A recent survey showed that 70% of people wouldn't approach a group of 14 year olds vandalising a bus shelter, for fear of attack. Are we turning into a nation running scared of chavs? Are this generation of children being brought up correctly, to respect authority and other people?"
Somebody else who knows about the girl says she's now 12 and smoking 20 fags a day.
(Small point, I know but what does "chavs" stand for?). _________________

I believe chav comes from an old Romany word meaning child, although how it came to have its modern meaning, I have no idea.
I remember reading about the case in question, spry. What kind of life is that baby going to have? The mother (or grandmother, now) needs to have a good hard look at her own parenting skills if she is "proud" of a situation like that.
Don't get me wrong, being a parent is not an easy task, especially these days, but too many people take it far too lightly and don't take their parental responsibilities seriously.
Any child can go off the rails - even from the best of families - but I'm sure most folk could cite examples where children are allowed to run riot and do as they please, from a very young age. No wonder they're not afraid of authority - or anyone, for that matter. |

Eleven is a shockingly young age to give birth - but it has happened in the past. In fact when I was eleven myself (not all that recently) I read in the paper about an eleven-year-old giving birth - and wondered aloud whether it would happen to me. My mother's reaction was to give me a wee book about The Facts of Life!
The youngest mother I have heard of was, unbelievably, aged five. This is a documented case involving a South American girl and her twelve-year-old cousin - in some Amazon tribes puberty comes extremely early.
Of course a child of either age is far too young to bring up a child herself. But the actual process of giving birth must be traumatic, too.
I wish these "fathers" were as publicly named-and-shamed as the mothers, though. They must surely be partly to blame. |

I think in that particular case (the 11-year-old), the dad was "named and shamed", but you're right, Anona, that doesn't normally seem to be the case. It does of course take "two to tango" as the saying goes, and both sexes need to take equal responsibility. |
