· Quote

This little problem has been niggling away at what passes for Zina's brain for a while, and she has finally handed it on to me to sort out, as usual.

The Shout Box. There are times when we apparently have no new posts here - our stats don't go up - nobody earns any smiles - and yet we are getting plenty of visitors, and plenty of posts. Why is this?

Because, dear readers, we are all happily posting away in the Shout Box.

You don't get any rewards for posting in there, either as smiles or in the number of your posts, and worse than this - some of these posts are our best ones, but they can be lost forever because the Shout Box is an ephemeral creature. It stores posts for only a few days, and then - poof! - they are all gone.

Somebody asked me a while ago whether they could be saved (for the benefit of members on holiday, for example) and I do sometimes remember to paste them up for posterity, but it isn't ideal - they appear from last to first post, rather than the normal first to last on the page, and the layout is difficult to read without quite a bit of editing - and anyway you still don't get the credit for your posts, but I do if it's me that copy-and-pastes them.

Not fair at all, is it?

Now - still listening? Good. This is my idea, and I want you to vote on it. After all, it's for your own good if you are a habitual Shouter.

Suppose we have a new section on the Forum - accessed from the main Index page as usual - with a sort of stream-of-consciousness Topic - in other words, a never-ending conversation, rather like the Shoutbox? I have seen this done on other forums, and to work in a more user-friendly way I think it would be best divided into monthly chunks, perhaps even weekly ones. This would be easy to do, and much quicker than the current editing, copying and pasting.

There would be advantages - posts would appear in the usual order, first to last. You would get the credit for your posts, and you would earn smiles. And your pearls of wisdom would be preserved, without further effort on anyone's part.

What do you think? I'm going to add a Poll for you to vote on (no, Hyde, not dance around) but you can still add your thoughts on the matter.

The Poll will run for a week - I'll save the current contents of the Shoutbox as far as that point, but after that - well, it's all up to you.

I've ticked "more information" because, being thick, I cannae quite see the difference between the new method and the back-chat we have on the regular forum.

Anona, I like the idea of giving you less work preserving the shoutbox could you not have a topic called shouts that way (as you say) it would preserve posts without effort on your part.  TBH I had forgotten all about smileys and I certainly wouldn't post just to increase my smiley count.

Really the new version would be just like a normal forum, except that there would only be one topic to post in, and it could be on any subject or none.

At the moment we sometimes have quite long conversations in the Shoutbox, but they're not on any particular subject - not history, or walking in the woods or anything - it's just Sue and Edna eating biscuits together, or Soup and Spry fighting over Wen again. So there isn't an obvious place to post it except the Shoutbox - and then if it's entertaining enough to keep, somebody has to go through the copy-paste-edit thing.

If my suggestion works, the posts would be preserved automatically and "the right way up" - you wouldn't have to read it backwards like old Shoutbox posts.

The intention is to let the topic run, free-for(u)m, for a day or a week or until it comes to a natural conclusion, then lock that one and open a new one. So all the old stuff will be there to read if you want to, and the new one will still be there for new thoughts.

I'm probably making this sound much more complicated than I meant to! Give it a try - use both ways for a few days - and see if it works. If it doesn't - it goes in the bin. But whatever has been posted will be saved.

I've decided I like the new way so I'll stick another vote in for keeping it (now that I've had more information).

I've forgotten the mechanics of voting (God, I must have done it this morning, too!).   Where do I click?

I suspect that you're only allowed one vote, Spry - sorry!

But I'll keep your other self in mind when we do the Big Exciting Dramatic overnight Vote Count.

If we do go with this new idea, the existing Shoutbox will disappear, but the new one will be in the same place - and I'll put the old saved Shoutbox stuff in with it.

I'm in the "not bothered either way" category. I don't mind the shoutbox, but I wouldn't be opposed to the other suggestion either.

Aona said
' Soup and Spry fighting over Wen again.'

First may I make it clear that no-one ever fought over me and I feel honoured that these two obviously kind, thoughtful men choose to lift my spirits in this way.

Like everyone else I don't have a concrete view.

If it saves you work Anona, do it!  I really value what you give us here and would make your life as easy as possible.

Although I hesitate to say it, Wen, you're spot on about me being kind and thoughtful but believe me they're not made that way in Balerno.

--------------- so with that in mind, and for your own good, I think you should abandon that rogue from the outer darkness and concentrate solely on me.

Ah but I am not a native of Balerno (been hear twelve years still treated by some as a white settler).
Thinks :- shall I let Spry join the kind and considerate club of which I am a founder member.
Sue get that Bahookie back here, I have sharpened this pin specially

You see - this is exactly the sort of conversation that doesn't fit into any of our categories - but is great fun, and doesn't deserve to disappear into the ether!

I haven't voted yet - for obvious reasons - but I know which way I'm hoping you'll all go. Even those who are sitting - oh, sorry Sue, I see that now Soup has ministered tenderly to you, you are standing - on the fence.
