I passed the time of day with a bloke recently "Aye, it's a cauld mornin".

He looked at me almost in anger, "It's a NICE mornin!!"

"So it is" said I, "cauld but nice or even nice but cauld".

He glowered at me.  " IT'S NICE!!"  And with that he walked on.

That set me thinking.  How difficult some folk find it for an event to be two things at once.  Or to profess to like something if they have a preference for something else in the same category.  They've even feel they've got to HATE the other thing.

For example, I know people who

LIKE dogs but HATE cats (and vice versa as are all of these examples)

LIKE showers but HATE baths

LIKE dark chocolate but HATE milk chocolate

LIKE floury potatoes but HATE waxy ones

LIKE rugby but HATE football (the younger generation seem to be a bit more eclectic in their taste here).

I even knew two women who fell out because one LIKED OXO cubes but HATED Bovril and of course it was vice versa for the other woman.

The word "preference" doesnae seem to be in their vocabulary.

It's the same with politics (bad word).   NEVER, EVER say that the party you don't support did anything right.  Heavens, they're all democratic parties, surely they're ALL bound to get something right some of the time.  But do you ever hear this from the diehards?

And we talk about having referendums!  Or maybe I just know too many of the wrong folk.

My old English teacher once told us that love and hate were simply two sides of the same coin - and could flip from one to the other just as easily!

I don't mind people who have strong preferences for something - it's indifference or apathy which really annoys me!

I think I'm just peculiar. I like both cats and dogs, but neither football nor rugby.

But mention politics (of any colour) and I'll run screaming out of the house!

P.S. Cats and dogs often like each other, too - unless their humans teach them different.

My dog likes cats, but can't really understand why most of them don't really like him or want to play with him! Funnily enough, he went to stay with our neighbour when we were on holiday in October, and immediately became best buddies with their newly-acquired eight-week-old kitten! I've got a photo of the two of them snuggling up to each other on his blanket!

Preferences are fine and are normal.  It's when people can see nothing good in the alternative that makes me wonder about them!

Now that seems a perfectly rational attitude.

I wish I had taken a photograph of our three shelties and two cats when they lay in front of the fire in a tangled heap!

Sadly, there are some people whose glass will always be half-empty and who are unable to see any point other than their own. You'll never change their sort, and it's a thankless task to even think of trying.....

I try to avoid them but it's not always possible (especially if they happen to be relatives!).
