I'll keep that in mind. I want to improve my knowledge of bird song, so that's a good one to listen out for |

anyways- it mentions the coal seam being near the "great bridge"- no futher details of the great bridge or what that is ------------------------

Did we ever find out what was meant by "the great bridge"?
The reason I ask is that my cousin took this photo of the bridge that you pass over if you follow the road into the Estate from the Spear Gate.
It doesn't look all that "great" but compared with the other bridges that existed on the Estate at the time the Memoirs were written, it maybe appeared as a stoater. Trouble is the Memoirs are dated 1676-1755 ---- does this bridge look that old?

I didn't pick this up last time round, Moo. Yes, "lowrie" is an old name for a fox and at one time I assumed that "Lowrie's Den" meant "Foxes' Den" but someone, somewhere on a forum said that they remembered playing in the ruins of Mrs. Lowrie's cottage. I wonder now if it was just an assumption that a Mrs. Lowrie lived there?

|
|
i am indeed abusing a friends internet connection to post my latest photo extravaganza
well- today was another lovely day so we trekked out to have a look and adventure round the estate (ADMIN: feel free to move this as its not at all to do with water treatments!
so we rambled and found this in a walled garden in the woods...
the Witches Altar does exist after all (complete with a season offering of Acorns and leaves)
spooky!
here is another view down the avenue straight to it- very rustic!
nice to find- anyone know about this?
Also walked past the top pond to find it eerie as hell with the fog and DRAINED! did somebody accidentally kick the plug out??
Check out the Tim Burton-esque scenery witht he boat house hidden in the fog- Kept thinking the headless horseman would ride across it.....
Is this always done to the pond in winter _________________ You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. |

Where is that Witche's Altar place? Barry's excited because it's somewhere he's never discovered in the Estate, and I'm really intrigued too! They are nice photos and the top pond looks lovely. |

Where was it they made that film - Swedish or something? - a few months ago? Lowrie's Den?
I wondered if they had spread out a bit, and had to do things like adjusting ponds to fit the requirements of the story. |

hi- will PM directions to those who wish (just to stop neds from finding it and ruining it!)
This is in the original walled garden- lots of this garden are private property so we didnt see the old gazebo's or garden house or standing stone circle thats allegedly in the other side.
Scarily it must be hunting time as some lazy hunter sod had scattered empty gun cartridges everywhere. we didnt go too far off track after seeing them......
Anna- instuction will be PM-ed to you!
legend is the lady who had the gared was sadly tried and killed as a withc- i think this old garden predated both House and stable. will check up on that though _________________ You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. |

I think your PMs stay in the Outbox until they are opened by the person at the other end, so don't worry - they should arrive all right. |

On some older maps Lowries Den is marked as Lauries Den, this name
also apears in the 1841 census. |
