|
|
Yesterday while sitting in the house, there was a huge boom from below and the entire house shook; probably not an easy task since it is an old house with thick walls. It felt as if an elephant had collapsed in the downstairs flat, and it was pretty violent. Strangely the same thing happened about a week ago and I have no diea what could've caused it.
In the evening I mentioned it in passing to my fiance's granny, who said that there's been earthquakes in Penicuik recently. I guess it's possible, but sounds quite unlikely too. Are we the only ones that have experienced this? We live in Bridge Street, Penicuik. Maybe the mines below are collapsing and ready to suck us in! |

Oddly enough the same thing happened up at the top end of Penicuik yesterday, though it didn't seem quite as dramatic as Anna's experience.
It felt to me as though somebody downstairs (or next door) had slammed every door in the house, all at once. Since I was the only person in at the time, I know that wasn't the cause. |

Yup, me too, at the Glencorse/Milton Bridge end.
There was a blinder of an earthquake a few years ago - early 70's maybe. At the far end of Roslin Glen, there were toppled trees and a massive landslip. |

Just had a wee look on National Geoloical Survey site.
There have been two small quakes in Penicuik recently. The first on
30/11/07 at 4pm 2.3 on Richter scale, the second yesterday at 5.08pm
again at 2.3. |

Those sounds like the times I experienced the bangs. I've never felt an earthquake before! Thanks for the info. |

I'll agree with Davie's times above - but there was another one here tonight, a few minutes after I typed that answer at 5:24 pm!
A smaller one this time, but the same otherwise. |

and an astonishing fact is the quake the other day (2.5 on the richter) is comparable to a WWII Blockbuster bomb! (i dont know what that is at all but Wikipedia has a very helpful list about the richter scale !)
what would i do without google.............. _________________ You know, you haven't stopped talking since I came here? You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle. |

I reckon it's all the digging we've been doing to plant those 164,020 trees!
It's interesting, though - having lived in places where tropical storms etc were expected, the worst weather and earthquakes I have ever experienced have been right here in Penicuik. |
