I put my name up for a plot in the Deanburn Allotment in June, and was 26th on the list. I checked to see if I'd moved up at all a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm 27th! The lady who gave me these numbers got it wrong the first time, which didn't fill me with confidence. I'm guessing at this rate I won't get one for at least 10 years.

I think it's a bit mad that there is just the one site for the whole of Midlothian.  But it seems the council would rather use spare land for even more houses than more allotment. Alas, I think it'll be faster buying a house with a garden at this rate.

Is there anyone here who use the allotments? Have I any hope?

I have to confess I didn't even know Midlothian had ANY allotments, Anna, but I agree wholeheartedly that a district the size of ours should have more. There must be areas of land lying unused at the moment which could be turned into allotments. I know those in Edinburgh and Musselburgh are very very popular and do have extremely long waiting lists too. It just proves that there is a demand for them.

If only the council realised that too. Well, for now I'll stick with veg from Damhead and maybe try growing a few things in windowboxes. But I am looking forward to eventually being able to grow all my own food.

Have you ever thought about offering to look after someone else's garden in exchange for a bit of it? Currently I look after ( part of ) four gardens plus my own, which in the summer keeps me a b it busy

If you've only got room for a windowbox, you can apparently still grow all of these:

Dwarf French Green Beans x 3
Peppers x 2
Mixed Lettuces x 10
Rocket x 10
Mizuna x 10
Spinach x 10
Golden streak mustard x 10
Carrots x 10
Basil x 1 pot
Parsley x 1 pot
Coriander x 1 pot

That's the Window Box Garden from Rocket Gardens - they've got more to offer if you've got enough space for a patio, or even a little patch of ground.

It's all organic, by the way. And you could still borrow a bit of garden from a friend or neighbour for growing bigger things.

I just recently got a temporary full time job, so sadly have no time at the moment. But once I finish in a year and a half, I'm hoping to go back to part time, or hopefully even back to self employed work. I had never really thought of the garden idea until I got an offer yesterday.
It's crazy how much of your life full time work takes away; I'm still getting used to it. But it'll certainly be a good option when I have the spare time again Smile
