To: Anona.Mouse@ . . .
Let me first thank everyone for being so understanding while we did these scans. It means a lot to us that you trust us to do the right thing and keep your boards in tip-top condition for years to come.
In response to these scans, I made the following post in our community forums:
\"If you\'d like a host that will go full steam ahead until everything crashes I\'m sure you won\'t have a hard time finding one.\"
One your fellow members, \"Outsider\", replied with:
\"Been there done that ...I\'ve been with this host going on 2 years the service is MUCH better than you\'ll find on ANY other free hosting provider.
And the few times our forums have been down there has always been a good reason and when they came back on everything works just as before or even better\"
A member (\"Patt\") said in a related thread:
\"I have a board with Free Powerboards and while some of my members get a little ansy when things like this occur they completely understand that this helps keep the boards up to date and that gliches and problems are corrected properly. So they don\'t mind the wait. The people here at Free Powerboards run a great place and I am very satisfied and happy that I chose them for my message board. I\'d rather be with a site that takes pride in keeping things running smoothly then being with a site that crashes everytime you turn around and I have been with other sites that do just that crash alot.\"
I just wanted to thank these members (and the hundreds who have been sending supportive emails) who have been expressing their appreciation for the long hours we put in to keep things well maintained.
We understand uptime is a huge deal for forums. What is the point of one otherwise? We also understand from watching countless competitors vanish in a day that proper maintenance is what has allowed us to host hundreds of thousands of boards for nearly 3 years of service; and it is what will keep us hosting hundreds of thousands more in the coming years.
Thanks again and, as always, thank you for choosing FreePowerBoards.com!
We have a lot of neat new things coming and we hope you will enjoy them!
(If you have any questions/comments/concerns please feel free to reply to this message)

No doubt many of you have noticed that the "remember me" button is not working properly, since the downtime - I find that it will remember me for a short time on the same Internet session, but if I go offline I have to sign in again when I come back.
I know it's a pain, but I suspect it's a hang-on from the scanning, which was partly to address security issues on V2 boards.
I'm trying to get it fixed, but in the meantime, please accept my apologies - and just sign in when you have to, for now.
Thanks for your understanding and patience.

It's a bit of a pain, yes - but at least we can get on here once again, which is the main thing! |

Thanks, Sue - if it's any consolation, it's just as much of a pain for me! The Admins have to sign in twice, because we're double-wrapped (to keep the freshness out, I suspect). |

Well, we do try to please - but for some of us, at least, freshness may be a shade hard to come by!

Yes, sorry, Mike - it is on a go-slow again today.
All these problems were going to be fixed . . .

Re: Incredibly slow loading board
by Chris on Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:24 pm
I load the pages more than anyone I'm sure. I also have windows open that monitor our servers so I'm aware of any slowness on a server-wide basis.
Something is hanging up and we are looking for what it is. The boards respond fairly well under normal circumstances and the only slowness you are seeing is when we are doing scans or corrections, ironically.
Some might say don't fix wasn't isn't broken but I believe in preventing what hasn't broken yet.

Yes, we had yet another downtime on Tuesday night, and since I was watching a video at the time I couldn't warn you - sorry! But the good news is that we are back again, and the better news is that our loading time seems to be back up to speed, and the even better better news is that this message from Chris and the Techs:
| Quote: |
| We think we have solved the recent load issues. Please stay tuned while we check! Your patience has meant the world. We look forward to rewarding your patience with the fastest load times you have ever seen! |
seems to suggest that they've got it fixed at last - whatever it was! I do hope so, just as you do.
So - business as usual, I hope. Lots and lots of posts, please, everyone - we've got some catching up to do!

Well, thanks for that, Mike - but my fingers will not be completely uncrossed until we've all been in, out and in again to prove that the sticky log-in is working again!
I know that's been one of the very annoying things lately. |

What is the deal?

To: all of us
Hey FreePowerBoards! You said the slowness was over!
This is the basic response we are getting since the last email we sent about things being fixed.
What happened was after the scans we found something else that may or may not be lagging the boards just a little bit. Without scans our pages load nearly instantly but there is always room for improvements. So, we thought we\'d slow things down a little bit again in order to make things even fast for the long run. (Note: We announced this to anyone who had downloaded our FPB Notify program http://www.freepowerboards.com/site/winapp/fpb-notify.zip)
Apparently, we overstepped our bounds and our users want nothing to do with that...
We have stopped the scans until we can find a less obtrusive way to still correct the possible issue.
If you have any issues with people not being able to stay logged on, posts not going through, etc just email us and we\'ll run that scan just on your board (take only a minute per board) in the meantime.
Thanks for your cooperation during all of this and please enjoy the scan-free load times.
NOTE: We are not giving up on making things even faster. We know the majority of our users appreciate what we do to keep things running in tip top shape and it is only those who are upset who speak loudest. We noticed the scan was scanning over a lot of boards that it might not need to scan, making it take longer, so we are going to try to correct that before doing anything again.
