True.  And there were virtually no cars so the folk in the outlying areas thought it made sense to have their own gala instead of trekking away up to Penicuik.

Its really quite sad when gala days die out. The Beltane queen ceremony is slowly being squeezed out of Peebles. By health and safety issues, Incomers who see it as not really PC, and sadly by some locals who think its a drain on the towns finances. The adult horsey things will be maintained as there is a great deal of money to be made out of it by the pubs and the livery stables. The other thing that is likely to disappear in Peebles this year or next will be the Christmas lights, sad.

There are some nice film clips of the Beltane at British Pathe.

I can't show the clips on here, but if you follow this link to the search index page you should be able to choose and watch the ones you fancy.

I think the years were 1921, 1922 and 1926. There are some sheepdogs doing their stuff, too, a bit later on, 1942 - oh, and a film with Willie Merrilees in it.

I noticed some bunting on the lamp posts this weekend, Spry - a long way up the lamp posts - so you could be right!

Nice to see such support for community events....but gala season is just around the corner. Poltonhall's is the first, I think - on Sunday - and then it's all action right round the country throughout June.

Pity it's not a gala day in Penicuik.   I've got a nostalgic notion to hing out of Leester's widow --- sorry, window --- an' watch the croonin' like I used to do in the auld days.

(That's when the ceremony was held in the High Street.  Wonder if they switched to the Park before going kaput?).

Well if you like a really good Gala day its the Beltane Queen ceremony in four weeks, I think. Its nice to see hundreds of people out on the streets with the traffic stopped for hours going along Peebles High street. It is likely that in the very short term that it also will be stopped because of Health and Safety madness.
