It's in the news, of course, so ye'll hae heard o' it.......
(Actually, I think Alex is being a wee bittie mischeevyus again: the official report's supposed tae officially be kept fae the papers until 2040 - even though it was reported by the New York papers a couple o' days after it happened.)
Anyways, tae mah point......
In the marketplace in Nice, I'm sure I recall seeing a memorial to the people who died on the Lancastria. The ship was sunk off St. Nazaire on the N.E. coast of France. Why would there be a memorial in Nice on the Med? |

I've had a good look around on Google, but this is the only plaque I could find for Nice.
If you click on the pic it should enlarge.
It's in honour of USA paratroops who liberated Nice. _________________ It's good to have a sense of humour .... |

Nah, the memorial I saw was on a stone wall and it had a picture of the ship on it. I'm sure it was the Lancastria. |

I had a good look round the Lancastria Association's site, but couldn't find any connection with Nice.
Nice does have a massive war memorial..... Really huge, with names on every surface. In fact, I thought there were too many names for it to be commemorating the dead of Nice alone. Maybe they've got some tradition there of commemorating virtually anyone who helped France. (The only time I was ever there, I didn't have time to look at it properly.) Maybe such "tradition" could explain why there was a memorial in the market. |

Isn't it a naval port? Maybe that could be it. Perhaps Nice has a memorial to all seagoing casualties.
The Lancastria was supposed to help with the Dunkirk evacuations too, which could give a French link, I suppose. Perhaps there were other Nicois aboard when it went down? |
