|
|
As it says, four Midlothian post offices set to close - Easthouses, Carrington, Lasswade and Poltonhall. Six-week consultation period under way now - but will there be much of an outcry, and will it make any difference?
Also quite a few closing in East Lothian and the Borders as well, including the Rosetta one in Peebles. Mobile and outreach services being proposed to replace some of those... |

As usual, I expect the "consultation" will be done as quietly and unobtrusively as possible.
It's all very well for those who do their banking online and send only e-mail - but there are still a lot of people who rely on a local PO for their pensions and parcels and plain old stamps for their letters.
Including letters complaining about the withdrawal of the Post Office . . . |

It's happening here across the border too...
.....it was announced too that there would be only one post delivery per day, not two; which is a bit odd as we (chez silvers) have not had a second post round in at least 30 years!
...AND... the post can arrive anytime between 8.30 and 2.30... if at all ... _________________ It's good to have a sense of humour .... |

Yes, well, we've only had one delivery a day for a long time - and very rarely earlier than 11.30 am. For some reason we almost never get post on a Monday - but that may be a coincidence. |

Since benefits and pensions were paid into bank accounts the post office down from us seems really quiet . With stamps available from the co-op I can see no post office only "services" _________________ 'S riogal mo dhream

Weren't "The Post Office" and "The Royal Mail" split years ago.
Wife says the split was late 80s at the same time "Parcel Force "split from "The Royal Mail". _________________ 'S riogal mo dhream

Theoretically, yes. But if we miss a parcel delivery, it's still the Post Office we go to to collect it. And many people will still talk about their "post office book", rather than their "National Savings and Investments account".
Bank accounts are all very well, but not everyone can use them. I have terrible problems trying to open a bank account, for example, because I don't have a passport or a driving licence as ID. I have to take my OH along and he opens a "joint account" in both names, even though he explains that the account will be mine, and operated solely by me.
If I was even older, and didn't have anyone to open the account for me, I'd be in trouble. |
