At my school we were hosting a book drive for children of Uganda (A third world country involved in a civil war, information more about them: http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php)
Suggest to your libraries principals and any authoritative figure in the town. Ask them to set out a box (matters not how big or how small) with the words "Invisible Children book drive" printed across the front in big bold letters, then gather up your own books, as many as you can that you would be allowed to, and turn them into a collection point.
*Note: Do not bring textbooks, comicbooks, encyclopedias(dictionaries), or magazines*
This one can last for as long as there's interest in it.

Once you get it set up, it's really easy to do, just take your old books which you don't read anymore at a large quantity, and put them in a box at either a public or private collection point, heck, you can even (if you get it into the schools) get it to be somewhat of a contest giving kids the incentive to bring books to their last class,
