My family tree includes Charles Coote who married Elizabeth Flack in the Chesterton District of Cambridgeshire (most likely either Great Wilbraham or Bottisham) in 1853. They migrated to Sydney in 1855, but I have not been able to find any leads in Australia. Does anyone know anything else about Charles and Elizabeth.

Hello David,

On the database on this site you will find Elizabeth Flack bap. April 20th 1835 at Great Wibraham, daughter of Henry Flack and Sarah. Married Charles Loote (clearly a mis spelling) November 27th 1853 at Great Wibraham.

I have looked at the Assisted immigrants records on the NSW Publice Records Office website and found Charles and Elizabeth arriving in Sydney on the Regina 1857.

I have found a death for a Elizabeth Coote, daughter of Henry and Sarah (no surname given) at Hartley NSW in 1867.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Leigh

Thanks for this correction: the marriage certificate definately says Loote, but it is one of the handwritten ones, not the ones that include a photocopy of the entry, so the mis-transcription was not picked up. I did notice that the GRO Marriage index said Coote, but assumed that the error was that side (being a index of a copy of the original county based records and therefore more prone to error) - my apologies.

Anyway, I have now corrected the surname of Charles and his father William on the database. If you have any further details on the descendents of Charles Coote and Elizabeth Flack (or the family of Charles) that you would like to see added to the database, please let me have the details and I will do the necessary. Just for the present please don't rely on emailing me from the site with the details - some emails are getting through, others aren't - if you let me know via this message board that you have further information I will contact you directly.

Regards

Charles Coote was the oldest son of William Coote and Sabina Bradwell (born 1802 Botttisham according to the 1851 census) who were married on 11 Feb 1825 in Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire. William and Sabina had 10 children all baptised at Bottisham, Cambridgeshire:

Mary born 1826
Charles born 1827
George born1830
Emma born 1832 died Oct 1833
William born 1834 died Oct 1834
William born 1835
Emma born 1837
Elizabeth born 1839
Robert born 1842
Albert born 1845

According to the Index of Assisted Immigrants arriving in Sydney & Newcastle 1844-1859 (on the NSW State Records website mentioned above by Leigh) William Coote aged 55 arrived in Sydney in 1858 on the Grand Trianon accompanied by his family Sabina aged 53, Emma aged 21, Elizabeth aged 18, Robert aged 16 and Albert aged 12. The other two sons George and William appear to have gone out earlier on their own: George aged 23 arriving in Sydney in 1854 on the Ellenborough, followed by William aged 20 in 1855 on the Gilmore.

William Coote was baptised on 27 Jan 1799 in Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, the son of John and Mary Coote. John and Mary had six children baptised in Great Wilbraham: Elizabeth 1790, James 1792 (died in infancy), Ann 1794, Sarah 1767 (died as an infant), William 1799 and Sarah 1803. John was buried in Great Wilbraham on 07 Nov 1838 aged 76 and his wife Mary was buried there on 01 Aug 1833 aged 66.
