My great grandfather was James Wilfred or Wilfred James Mansfield. Born Great Wilbraham 25th February 1857. His father was David Mansfield and Mother Mary Ann Mansfield (nee Childs)
As there are a number of Mansfields from Great Wilbraham on the Flack family tree I wonder if anyone has any further information.
I was born in Cherryhinton Dec 1938 and we moved to Ainsworth Street Cambridge soon after.
I left cambridge in 1960 when I immigrated to Australia.
Regards
Graham Jones

Is it James Walter Mansfield as in the subject or James Wilfred as in the text? In the 1861 and 1871 censuses he is given as Walter.
Anyway, David Mansfield was baptised on 6 Mar 1831 in Great Wilbraham, the son of Walter Mansfield and Martha Fitch who were married in Great Wilbraham on 28 Mar 1828. Walter and Martha had 4 children baptised at Great Wilbraham: Emily (baptised 13 Jul 1828), David, Charles (baptised 27 Jul 1834) and Phoebe (baptised 24 Jun 1838).
Walter was the son of Thomas Mansfield and Ann Woollard who were married in Great Wilbraham on 22 July 1781. They had 7 children baptised at Great Wilbraham: Stephen (baptised 4 Nov 1781), Thomas (bap 2 May 1784), Ann (bap 29 Apr 1787), Mary (bap 14 Mar 1790), Maria (bap 30 Apr 1797), Walter (bap 16 Feb 1800) and Haylock (bap 1 Apr 1805).
Thomas was the son of Thomas Mansfield and Mary Purkiss - already on the database.
I will continue to work through the parish registers and censuses to fill in the details, but I just wanted to let you know what I had found so far.
Please can you let me know who your great grandfather James Mansfield married and when, just for the records!
regards
Denise

Thank you very much indeed for your reply
OOPS sorry it is James Walter Mansfield. I dont know where I got Wilfred from. After days of looking at various documentation my mind was in a spin. His birth certificate says James Walter Mansfield born 25th February 1857.
My grandmothers Birth Certificate shows Walter Mansfield as her father and Sophia Mansfield as mother, 3 Quinces Court, Hobson Street Cambridge. Date of birth 16th January 1890.
During the first world war the family moved to Dove House New Park Street.
My Grandmother's marriage certificate shows Walter James Mansfield Cab Proprieter as her father. He died aged 74 16th February 1932 aged 74 at Dove House ad was buried in Mill Road cemetary
(James) Walter married Sophia Wilmot nee Willmott presumably in Cambridge. I am waiting on some more details froma cousin in England and hope it will give more information

Hi again Denise,
I had some trouble searching for Mansfield in your database and have just noticed that Manfield seems to be interchangeable with Mansfield. Could this be a typo or was there a change in spelling?

The early Great Wilbraham parish records are all have it as Manfield: the spelling of the surname abruptly changed to Mansfield around 1804. For clarity I have changed all the Great Wilbraham Manfields to Mansfields on my master database, but the ones on the site will remain Manfield until we next do an update.
I have not been able to find the marriage for Walter James Mansfield and Sophia Willmott in the GRO Marriage Index, and also failed with the Cambridgehire Record Office Marriage Index - perhaps your cousin will have more luck. I have found from the Cambridge Holy Trinity Parish Records and the 1891 and 1901 censuses that they had 9 children:Harry (b 1882), Walter Thomas (b 1885), Alma Elizabeth (b 1888), Letitia (b 1889), Horace (b 1892), Herbert (1894), Arthur (b 1897), Kate (b 1900) and Ethel Lily (b 1903 died 1905). Arthur is a bit of a mystery because there is a burial entry for an Arthur Mansfield of 3 Quinces Court Hobson Street in the parish registers in Nov 1897 (aged 19 months) but he is still listed in the 1901 census for the family still at 3 Quinces Court. I thought perhaps they had a second son called Arthur but I can't find birth / baptism entries to back this up.
I have found 8 children for David Mansfield and Mary Ann Childs: besides your James Walter born 1857 they had Charles (b 1858 died young?), Elijah (b 1860), Jane (b 1863), Charles (b 1865), Haylock (b 1868), John (b 1871) and Martha (b 1875).
Regards
Denise
