Dear All

I am a new Flack researcher learning only today that my 5x maternal greatgrandmother Emma FLACK was born in Lakenheath and suddenly through this wonderful website I have found other members of her family.

She was Emma FLACK born 1855, Lakenheath, daughter of Mary Ann MATHEWS and Joseph FLACK.

Mary Ann was widowed and went on to marry John PARISH in 1857. This family plus a 3rd unknown child which must have been Mary Ann's and John's emigrated to South Africa in 1862. I quote from Esme Bull's book on Aided Immigration:

Aided Immigration from Britain to South
Africa 1857 - 1867" by Esmé Bull, and found the following entry which is interesting.

Emma Flack (7 years of age) and Joseph Flack ( 5 years of age), arrived in South Africa on the "Adelaide" (ship), in June 1862. They were "with John Parish" and "going to Grahamstown".

Again In Esmé Bull's :

John PARISH age 27, Railway Labourer, Mary Ann Parish, age 25 and three
children came out on the same ship in June 1862. They were going to
Grahamstown and under their entry it says "see under Flack entry".
Now under the Flack entry there are only two children listed, so who is the
missing third child?!

Emma Flack went on to marry a German immigrant called Franz Wilhelm Eduard SCHUMANN and have 10 children and died at 67 in 1922 in East London, Cape Province.

If anyone is researching this brach I would love to make contact.

Regards
Kathryn

I tried to find John and Mary Ann Parish in the 1861 census to see if I could find the third child, but despite using all the tricks I know to get around poor indexes I failed - they are definately not in Lakenheath in 1861. It seems a bit early to be "in transit" if they arrived in June 1862 - I know it took a long time by ship but surely not more than a year!

A thought did occur to me: young Joseph Flack was actually Joseph William Flack, so I wonder if "children Joseph William and Emma Flack" was interpreted as three children instead of two somewhere along the route.

Does Esme Bull's book list any other Flacks? 1857-1867 is too early for my own great grandfather Francis Walter Flack who went out there in the 1880's, but if there are others the details would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder what happened to Joseph. I did recently get an enquiry from a Flack (also now living in the Emirates!) whose family hailed from the Eastern Cape, so who knows!

If you would like to send me details of Emma and Franz's descendants, or Franz's family, to add to the database that would be very welcome.

Thanks for this information, and if anyone out there has any further information on these Flacks, or indeed any South African Flacks, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Regards
Denise

Hi Denise

I looked on the 1862 and didn't find the family as a unit either but did find a John and Mary Anne PARISH with a daughter Caroline which all tied in but no sign of the two step-children, so wondered if this was the family after all.

I did, however, find your Francis Walter FLACK in some information I was sent this morning from a Rootsweb list member:

" FLACK. Francis Walter, born 22 .5.1839 , Cambridge, England, arrived 1889 for Uitenhage, married 19/1/1892, Sarah Juanita, daughter of Peter POTE of Grahamstown. 2 sons, 1 daughter."

I have no other information on this family as it isn't my line, and there appears to be one other FLACK family in the Cape besides your and my lines, so all rather confusing as to who is who in the zoo.

Regards
Kathryn

Just to set the record straight on this: my great grandfather Rev Francis Walter Flack was born in Cambridge on 22 May 1859 (not 1839) - I have his birth certificate - and he and his wife Sarah Pote had four children, two sons and two daughters. I hope the marriage date is accurate - I have not been able to cross check this one yet
