Correspondence between Audrey and myself has enabled us to merged Tree201D (the head of which was the James Edward Flack born about 1830, father of the James Edward Flack who married Harriet Charlotte Waterman) with Tree290D which had as its head the James Flack, born abt 1771 in Brickendon Hertfordshire, who married Charlotte Smith.

This family is a complicated one because people seem to take great delight in using different names! James Charles Flack born 1855 also uses the name James Edward Flack and his father Edward James Flack was the son of James Flack aka Edward Flack (or should that be James Edward Flack?)

I think that  James Flack who gives his date and place of birth as 1771 Brickendon, Hertfordshire in the 1851 census is the same person as the James Flack who was baptised in 1773 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, the son of John Flack and Mary Dimsdale. Brickendon is not far from Hertford, and Mary Dimsdale was born in Brickendon, so it is possible that their son James may have been born there even though he was baptised in Hertford (their son William was baptised in Hertford All Saints, as were all his siblings, but gives his place of birth as Brickendon in the censuses). The James Flack baptised 1773 Hertford did not marry or have children baptised in Hertford that I have found, so he could well have been the one that married Charlotte Smith in 1803.

I have therefore also now taken the plunge and merged Tree290D into Tree037D which goes all the way back to Thomas Flack, born abt 1630, possibly in Furneaux Pelham, Hertfordshire, who married Joan Peacock in 1655. If anyone has any evidence to the contrary please let me know!
