· Quote

While working through the newly released 1911 census for England I realised that I/we had got two William Flack's son of William Flack confused. On the basis of the latest available evidence the William Frederick Flack who married Violet Ethel Chapple is the son of William Flack and Annie Banfield, leaving me to find a new home for the William Flack who married Louisa Matilda Patterson that I had down as their son.

According to the marriage certificate for William Flack and Louisa Matilda Patterson on 29 May 1898 in St Mary’s Somers Town, St Pancras, London his father William Flack was a silversmith. Now there is only one Flack silversmith that I know of and that is William Abraham Flack husband of Nancy Harper / Jane Sleeman, so I guess my missing William (born abt 1871 Clerkenwell) is the son of his son William (1855-1888) though I have no record that this William was a silversmith like this father. I have not yet come across a birth entry or a baptism record for a William son of William to support this.

According to the database William Flack, born 11 Jul 1855 son of William Abraham Flack and Nancy Harper married Elizabeth Jane Hooper on 13 Nov 1882 in Melbourne, Australia. No details are given on the database for this marriage record - if you have a copy of the marriage certificate or access to the marriage record is there any indication that William Flack was married before? Have we in fact got the right parents for the William Flack who married Elizabeth Jane Hooper - are his parents given on his death certificate for example? Does his death certificate indicate that he was married twice? Any help anyone can offer with this gap in my knowledge would be most gratefully received.

One other mystery: when William Frederick Flack married Violet Ethel Chapple he was a widower. I now need to find details of his first marriage – does anyone know?

Denise
