Neil Lennon has revealed he came to close to joining Wycombe earlier this week.
Wycombe made a move for free agent Lennon after he left Celtic last month.
Lennon is looking for a new club after spending almost seven years in Glasgow and he is set to return to England.
The 35-year-old's former Celtic team-mate Paul Lambert was keen to lure him to Wycombe and although Lennon admits he was tempted to join the League Two club he rejected their overtures as he wants to play at a higher level.
"Wycombe's offer put me in a real dilemma," Lennon told the club's official website. "I was so impressed by what they had to say that I'd almost made up my mind to join them.
"That was the only reason I said 'no' and it took a lot of soul-searching before I made my decision."
Wycombe confirmed they did everything they could to try and land Lennon
"We did everything we possibly could to sign him, but the fact that we're a League Two club went against us," said Wycombe managing director Steve Hayes.
"Regrettably, that's the one thing that we can't change overnight, but it makes us more determined than ever to win promotion next season."
Lennon's agent Martin Reilly claims a number of clubs, including a Premiership side, are chasing the former Leicester man.
"Neil's been offered a contract by a top Premiership club and several from the Championship and other divisions," noted Reilly.
"Steve Hayes put up a very convincing case for Neil to go to Adams Park and at one point I thought he was going to say 'yes', but Neil is still a very talented footballer and he wants to test himself at the highest level that he can." _________________

Wycombe are a funny club - they seem to take huge gambles on managers with no experirnce what so ever
First Tony Adams - then Paul Lambert - now Neil Lennon - obviously Lennon was wanted as a player by them but you can gurantee he would of been a target for manager _________________
