I was walking in the mall the another day and i came across another-yes- another Gambit fan. We got to talking and we tumbled on the subject of Wolverine. She told me that Wolverine couldnt die even if he wanted to because his powers just regenerates his body over and over again. She continued into stating that there was a time that Logan was just a tiny single cell and he's powers brought him back to a full fledge wolverine again. i just wanted to know what my fellow Gambitites think. Do you think he can never die? And if so is there proof of this? As most of you know i stopped reading for a few years and is getting caught back up. so enlighten me. Very Happy

I bring you proof from Marvel.com:

"Despite the extent of his healing factor, Wolverine is not immortal. If the injuries are extensive enough, especially if they result in the loss of vital organs, large amounts of blood, and/or loss of physical form, such as having flesh burned away by fire or acid, Wolverine can die."

He can also die from lack of oxygen, though that was not mentioned above.

Logan's powers are of a regenerative nature, so he heals quickly from wounds (that I'm sure you already know), but I don't think Marvel originally intended for Logan to possess the ability to respawn entire limbs.  The reason I say this is, if I correctly recall, Logan's hand (the future version) was destroyed in Days of Future Past, and he had some metal contraption on in.  Also, it just struck me, future Logan died in that series when a Sentinal fryed his entire body.  Anyways, am I correct about Logan losing his hand, or was there something else in that story line I forgot?

Technically yes he can die....but I voted no. Why? Cos Marvel won't let it happen! As for 'if the wounds are extensive enough'.....pft.....You tell me how Wolve can GET TORN IN HALF by the Hulk and then crawl across mountains with his entrails dragging behind him trying to find his bottom half, which he does and upon 'reconnecting' with heals up! NOW tell me thats not 'extensive'!!!

As for the future hand thingie....well in that scenario I guess they (M) would explain it as his healing power slowing down with his age and coping less.

He got incenerated to nothing but his skeleton in one of the most recent issues of his solo series, and came back.

In one of the X-Men Unlimited issues (with Dazzler, Storm, Kitty, Psylocke where they were taken to some crystal fortress or other) he was broken down to his very last atom, but since there was still one bit of him left he was able to come back.

He got seriously wounded, in his other solo series(Origins), and not only regenerated it, but ate his own arm to heal it? Although the logic defys me on that one, since why would you cause more damage to heal it?

He survived under water a hell of a long time in enemy of the state, when most other people drowned.

So I'd have to say no, although I think he was originally intended to be able to die and get hurt.

And the bit where he had his hand chopped off and it didn't grow back was AoA. He had a metal cap attached to it, and as far as I know was still able to use his claws in that arm.

Can anyone see the severe advantages to having a guy around who heals like that? I mean, come on. Imagine the stamina he must have...

I am in agreement though with the camp that feels the 'totallyimmortalwolverine' thing is a bit much.

Yeah I believe it was fully intended that he could die or be hurt real bad but writers kept pushing the boundaries for more and more shock factor to the point that it doesn't shock or surprise anymore! Its really sad cos I do have to admit he is a great character and I love him to bits second to Remy!

Wolverine can't die from the movie (X3 to be exact). But originally I don't know if Wolverine could die or not. But I voted no. I like to think that he can't die.

Wolverine co-creator Len Wein had originally intended for Logan to be a mutated wolverine, a wolverine cub that was evolved to humanoid form by the High Evolutionary.[5] In X-Men #98, a biological analysis of Wolverine suggests that he is not a full-fledged mutant, and in the X-Men #103, Wolverine says to a leprechaun that he doesn't believe in leprechauns, to which the Leprechaun replies, "Maybe we leprechauns don't believe in talking wolverines".

In a reprint of The Incredible Hulk #181-182 titled Incredible Hulk and Wolverine, an interview with Cockrum supports the claim that Wolverine was intended to be a mutated wolverine. Cockrum said he considered having the High Evolutionary play a vital role in making Wolverine a human. He wanted Wolverine to be the age of a young adult, with superhuman strength and agility similar to that of Spider-Man. This changed when Cockrum saw John Romita draw a maskless Wolverine as a hairy 40-year-old. Romita also intended the claws to be retractable and part of Wolverine's gloves. This idea was nixed by Claremont because he believed that anyone could then become Wolverine by wearing the gloves. Shortly after this, it was revealed that Spider-Woman is a spider evolved to human form by the High Evolutionary. Marvel Publisher Stan Lee was disgusted with the interpretation of the character and insisted that her origin be changed.[citation needed] Lee's strong reaction and subsequent demand for a retcon convinced Cockrum and Claremont that they could never get away with introducing Logan as a mutated wolverine.
