A man is scurrying around the french quarter of New Orleans. Hes speaking on his phone, desperate to contact someone in 'the guild'. He enters an elevator and someone catches the door before it closes. Riptide. He enters, the doors close for several seconds, and it opens again to find everyone inside dead, except Riptide "One Down"
The scene changes to Caldecott county, Mississippi. An old country house, the doors blow open and flames rush in, frying all the massive amounts of security equipment. Rogue stands at the door and says 'clear'
The team step uo behind her, and Mystique protests that this is her house, and it was once Rogues too, she didnt want it set on fire. Lady M comments that shes sure that once Cable fixes providence that he can give her house a makeover.
Rogue growls and says "Didnt I explain this to you?" Mystique shakes her head, Rogue had just said that they were going here instead of the institute. Rogue seems to jabber a bit that this is the place they need to be and that since shes team leader she shouldnt be second guessed. Cannonball tries to patch the door as Iceman asks mystique about her comm rig, Mystique takes him upstairs to it.
Karima asks if Rogue needs her to do recon. Rogue says that Cable should be able to do it, but Karima reminds her that Cable isnt with them. Then Rogue snaps that Karima should do it then.
Back at the mansion, Iceman talks to Cyclops about the urgency of Rogues state of mind, Cyclops says that he'll be coming and bringing the experts, the people she needs to see. He leaves Colossus and Kitty in charge and they set off.
Iceman tells mystique that the X-men take care of their own and Rogue will be fine. Mystique laments that Rogue was once her daughter, now she belongs to the X-men. Bobby objects, saying that Rogue is their friend, and Mystique states that she would have hated him for that at one time. But she knows Rogue has no reason to trust her, and has plenty of reasons not to. She says theres a perfect symmetry to this. That all they have built is coming to an end. She asks how he would spend his last night on earth. He puts his hand on her shoulder and says that it would be with someone he cares about. She asks him to pretend that it was. AND THEY GET IT AWWWWWWN!!!!
The scene changes to Providence as Cable sifts through the debris. He attempts to confirm with the professor that the city has been evacuated. The Professor contradicts him. there are two people on providence.
Lady M raids the kitchen for booze as Karima does damage control and they parry words. All of a sudden, Karima receives an urgent message on her connected laptop. She checks it and a sudden surge shoots through her, "Never open anything with attachments, sweethart" she says menacingly.
The scene cuts to new orleans, the treme. An old man in a clock shop is assailed by Greycrow and Vertigo, taking him down and placing a gun at his face.
Back on Providence, Cable faces the intruder with his cannon, threatening to crush them under a building if they dont show themselves. The tall dark and handsome intruder comments on how cold it is for cable to say that to an old friend, but he is glad to asist, a pink-glowing doll is tossed aside and explodes, taking out the building and sending Cable sprawling.
Rogue steps into her old bedroom and has the single most adorable flashback EVER Seriously. Mystique is putting Rogue to bed and they are playing around in their nightgowns as Mystique says she'll turn into a monster and eat her and Rogue giggles, saying she'd taste terrible. Canonball walks in and offers a penny for her thoughts 'the standard market rate'. She replies that this is what Rogue thought of as home. Sam asks if she still thinks of herself as Rogue. She replies, straining, sometimes, but there are too many voices now, and Rogue is trying to hold together. She says that Sam shouldnt sneak up on her, she could easly turn her head and kill him. He tells her Cyke and the others are here.
Gambit smiles a Cable, asking if heaven is more joyus for a sinner that rempents. He comments on the fact that he has dropped 'dat whole new look'. Cable asks how he managed that. Gambit says that he had some help from his friends, and he didnt come here for a fight, he just needs to ask the computer a few questions, mainly the time. He thinking its 'one minute before dawn'. Before Cable can react, Gambit throws a volley of cards at him, offering to show him a card trick. Cable catches it with his TK easily and says that its not going to be that easy. Gambit smirks and says "I said it was a trick, Cable"
Sunfire barrels down from the heavens and knocks Cable into the ground. Gambit comments on how Cable should just keep watching his hands. Cable counters, sending Sunfire flying, Sunfire spits that Cable is supposed to be a great strategist but he just let his guard down on home turf and misses the obvious. Gambit meanwhile comments at how he also forgets the fine details "Two, one, zero." Cable looks down just in time to see Gambits cards in his face on the ground. Cable is sent flying. He runs, and Gambit tells sunfire to let him flee, they only need to win the 'last hand'.
Back at the mansion, Emma enters Rogues mind, commenting on if she would be allowed to change her accent and her taste in men. What emma sees is a horrific visage of nightmarish bodies writhing in agony, hundreds, thousands, problably more. Emma fears the worst, none of the minds have fused with Rogue, theyre all separate, and terrified. Beast has isolated the virus, but cant find a single thing that will phase it, let alone treat it. They suggest having her touch Logan, but Cyke regards it as a last resort, they dont want wolverine dead. Emma breaks contact, her mind hurting, its like looking for a grain of sand in a desert where every grain is screaming. She could build flood blocks but theres no dry ground to build on.
Rogue is breaking down, and is slowly loosing her identiy. Mystique loses it, asking Emma to fix her now. Emma says she needs time to gather herself before she can go back in again. Karima and Lady M step in mysteriously and smirk.
Cable stumbles into the main control room, beaten and bleeding, he asks the computer to search for 'One minute before dawn'. Sunfire busts in, thanking Cable for helping them find the place. Cable tells them they dont know what theyre about to destroy. Sunfire says that Cable will die, but his knowledge will live on to serve a greater purpose. Cable chokes and says "Requiem". a wirring starts, and Gambit and Sunfire flee as Cable explodes.
Wolverine pops open a cold one as they sit around the table, snacking and discuss why Rogue came to the X-men. Mystique turns and says theres trouble. One of her alarms has been tripped, multiple signatures, a hundred yards, but no visus. Emma detects nothing outside, Mystique objects, but Emma clarifies, she detects nothing, no birds, or frogs, or insects. Which means theres a psi shield up. Cyclops springs into action, ordering Beast and Wolvie to secure the Blackbird, Iceman is orderd to have 'his team' start a perimeter. Emma studies her readings, and realizes the shield extends into this very room. Karima turns and stuns her, telling her she'll finish her off later. "Malice moves with the times" she says "I'm digital now"
The other X-men however, notice nothing. Wolverine sniffs, he says they have stealth suits, and they must be in the house, he orders Drake to ice up, but he finds he cant. Sam wonders why they cant see them. Lady M snaps her fingers "Sorry, that'd be me"
The illusion goes away and the X-men find themselves surronded by flames and face to face with Vertigo, Prizm, Harppon, Riptide, Scrambler, Scalphunter, Arclight, and one more I dont remember who they are.
The battle begins, and Karima stuns wolvie and Cyke outright. Iceman is shot through the torso by scalphunter, his ice begins to fade and he panics, bleeding terribly.
Rogue wakes up in bed and is on the move in seconds, rallying the x-men and getting them into formation. The battle is vicious, and Scalphunter takes aim at Rogue, Mystique comes around and punches him out "You dont shoot my daughter!". she draws her gun," Nobody else can do that for me."
Rogue is shot through the chest.
Mystique lowers her gun
"Mission parameters stand, Marauders. Kill them all!"

I wonder about the references to time in this issue...First we see the old man with the clock; he says he all ready knows how this plays out. Then Gambit shows up on Providence wanting to ask the computer what time it was. He also adds the cryptic: "Minute before dawn" comment.
Any ideas? Is Gambit confused about what time it is? Or is he just being bonkers?

It has a side story with Deadpool, but its mostly Cables inner monologue during the fight. The underlying theme is a flashback from Cable. Back in the war with apocalypse in his time, he tried to sacrifice himself for his squad to save them. But one of his team members overrode him and blew herself up, taking out their foe in the process. She saved their lives and spared his. And he could not even remember her name.
I think my favorite part is the last words Deadpool and cable say to each other.
Deadpool: Do not say thank you. Do not say you are proud of me. Do not say goodbye.
Cable: Your zipper is down.
Deadpool: *looks down to see he has no zipper*
Cable: *smirks* Made you look
And as Deadpool goes one way and Cable goes the other way, Cable thinks "Thank you. I'm proud of you. Goodbye"

There are however some variances in dialogue. When Cable threatens to bring the building down on Gambit, Gambit replies "Liar Liar Pants on fire." and charges a little spider man doll. He tosses it at Cable and says "I meant dat literally"
He quickly makes it abundantly clear that he means to kill Cable, and Cable thinks (in a rather mean way) that Gambits non-mutant power must be to annoy. Deadpool meanwhile tangles with former Acolyte Senyaka.
Cable is badly beaten by Gambit and Sunfire and comments on as they injure him, his mechanical components move to seal the wound, slowly taking every bit of his real body. Cable however thinks that what Gambit and Sunfire do not realize is that a good soldier knows how to win even when he loses.
Gambit and Sunfire chase Cable into the control room just after he turns on the self destruct. Sunfire moves to kill him, and he says "Requiem".
Meanwhile Deadpool and his acolyte buddy have been fighting over a small trophy that Cable says holds important technology. Deadpool doesnt understand why Cable trusted him with something important, but as the item begins to glow, Deadpool realizes. Its mean to get him out of there, he vanishes in a stream of white light.
Cable's monologue goes on to say that if your going to sacrifice your life you might as well do it for someone, or something, that matters. As Sunfire and Gambit flee Cable smiles, blood on his face. He remembers her name now.
Providence explodes and Deadpool finds himself on the sofa at his home. As Deadpool flips on the TV and hears about the massive distortions detected at providence, he promises Cable he wont let him down.

In an underlying way it makes me think of the whole mutant extinction thing - time is running out for mutants. Of course the villians (marauders, Apoc, Mystique etc) are probably trying to even the odds by killing humans (a mega bomb perhaps?) or (as Sinister has done in the past) detonate some chemical that would mutate normal humans into mutants and so counteract M-Day? _________________ *

The last moment of darkness before the coming of the light perhaps? The arc title is 'Blinded by the Light', which Carey said isn't metaphorical, so it could have something to do with that.

I would go more for doing something to reactivate the mutant gene and counteract M-Day. Sinister is trying to save mutants, and I think any killing of humans would probably be seen as a bonus by him. Besides, he'd probably rather study them than kill them.

Why did Cable seem to know the phrase "One minute before dawn"?
Why was Quiet Bill (who had the mutant ability to open interdimensional portals and saved Remy from New Son at the end of that arc) trying to contact the Guild at the beginning?
Why were the Marauders taking people in New Orleans down?
Why has Lady Mastermind defected?
Why did Mystique shoot Rogue?

True. I guess she must want to be on the 'winning' side. Interesting that she defected after Malice took over Karima though and not before.

Alls i'm going to say about this whole arc is that the whole theme is "time." Mutantkind is running out of time. the x-men are running out of time. therefore, i would expect cryptic references to a new beginning or the end with time, such as SERIOUS WHOLE ARC SPOILERS!:
