                                             Preface

The glass of wine was empty once again. The taste of the merlot was still on Jolene’s lips. She swirled the empty glass around in a circle mindlessly staring into the space in front of her. She wasn’t paying attention to the television’s lights flickering in the dark. She was just waiting for her son to return home.

What time is it? She thought.   She got up from her comfortable chair and slowly walked into the hallway that connected to the kitchen. She used the wall to support her weight down what was usually short hallway. She flicked on the lights, which were blinding, and sat her glass down on the island. Damn, it’s quiet. It had been quiet in her house for almost a year. After Michael died there wasn’t much noise.

This was the time her and her late husband was looking forward to. Their son was graduating from school and going to college in the fall. Their nest was finally empty; finally theirs and theirs alone. But god had a different plan for the Hunter’s. Michael Hunter was not in the future plans. His story was cut short with a fatal heart attack. People had said he was so young or he looked healthy to me. Jolene just concluded the strongest or healthiest people still will died in the end. Why not Michael? She wasn’t bitter…or least she didn’t think she was. She was numb. She only loved three men in her whole life. First was her father, who was in his eighties and still living. Second was her first love, Kelly Allpin, which, of course, broke her young heart. And thirdly was her godsend, husband Michael.

Michael. The man that would give you his last dollar to anyone who needed it. The man whose smile would brighten the night sky. The man who gave her a son, Darien. The man’s who last words “I love you dear”.

Jolene poured her glass full once again. She took a sip and looked at her apple kitchen clock. Three o’clock. Where is that boy? She walked over to the phone and blindly dialed his cell phone number.

He answered on the first ring. “Hello? Mom? Are you alright?”

“Yes,” she answered. “Where are you? You were supposed to be home at midnight.”

“I know mom. I know. I had to give this girl, Jordan, a ride home and she lives pretty far away.” Darien paused. “I am in the drive right now, mom. See you in a sec.”

She hung up the phone. Sober up girl, your baby is coming in. She pulled her hair back in a high ponytail and wiped her hands on her robe. She practiced smiling and turned towards the back door. Darien walked in reminding Jolene of Michael. Darien was a spiting imagine of her late husband. He was the same height as Michael. He even has the same dark smothering figures as Michael. The only difference Darien and Michael was that Darien was not clean-shaven; a problem that had arose when Darien started maturing.

“Did you have fun at the party?” Jolene smiled.

“Yeah,” he looked at her wine glass. “Drinking?”

“Yes, anyway. How was the party and who is this Jordan girl?” She could tell he liked her. His face sort of brightened up when she said her name.

“She is this girl from my Calculus class.” He ran his hand threw his hair and plopped down on a stool next to the island. “I have been trying to get with her for about two years now but she was always with somebody.”

Tramp. She thought. “Really?”

“Yeah, but tonight we hit it off real well.” Darien smiled sheepishly. Jolene pasted a smile on her face to pretend she was excited like he was about this girl. She didn’t want her son to date…ever. She continued to drift off into her own thoughts while Darien describe Jordan. Darien is getting older and he will be leaving the end of the summer. Then what? What am I going to do? Sitting here and knit? No, I need to get out of this house. Join a traveler’s club or something. With the money that Michael and I were saving I have enough money to do anything. Go anywhere. But where would I go…there’s I want to be now. Hmm, my life turned out so funny and distorted.

“MOM!” Darien shouted.

“What?” she shook her self out of her thought.

“So it’s okay right?” Darien said with wide eyes. “It’s okay if I go with Rizzo to his dad’s house for the summer. You’ll be okay, right?”

“Yeah…yeah…sure.” She waved her limp hand. “Just remember to come back.” She cupped his face and kissed his cheek. “I love you and you know that.”

She could feel him relaxing in her hands. He smiled up at her and kissed her forehead. “Not nearly as much as I love you.”

Surprised
