The book begins with Emma cynically reviewing their situation and reading the minds of those around her, obviously this is not a good situation for them to be in. And speaking of frost, our de-powered Iceman is making his way to Rogue as the others keep the Marauders at bay, Cannonball playing the human shield and Wolverine....well, doing what he does best. However, by the time Iceman is at Rogues side, he has a gun pointed at his head, Mystique tells him "Sorry, but Rogue is ours."
Iceman is furious, and the two begin fighting hand to hand, he asks what she did to him, and she explains that there was a neural inhibitor on her lipstick....and elsewhere. His ice form would be too powerful for the marauders to handle, so he had to be eliminated.

Emma has her body paralyzed by biotoxins from Karima, so she can't move. She contacts Sam, saying that he's their only chance, and she downloads all the info she gathered from the Marauders mind to Sam's head. She says that isn't a grudge fight, but something bigger, and that the Marauders have a list of targets that they need to save.
She controls Sam's body against his wishes and makes him fly out of the house, but he gets Iceman on his way out. Emma keeps controlling him until they get to the X-Jet. They fly away. The X-Men at the house are defeated. Mystique tells the Marauders to stop because they already have what they wanted (she looks at Rogue). The Marauders make their way out of the house, with Mystique having Rogue flung over her shoulder. Lady M says that she'd hate to interrupt the Kodak moment, but shouldn't they do something in case the X-Men try to follow? So Mystique gives the word to Arclight, and she makes Mystique and Rogue's old house crumble around the remaining X-Men. One of them asks about the ones who escaped, and I think Mystique is the one that says that all they're doing is going to another place to die.
Bobby yells at Sam for fleeing, saying that they could've done something to help, but Sam tells Bobby that he wasn't in control of himself and that it was Emma's doing. He tells Bobby that Emma sent him a list of targets for the Marauders, and even though he can’t see the link between the targets, they gotta save the people on the list but Sunfire attacks the Jet. Bobby says he can't do anything to help since he can't freeze up, and he has to be at subzero to do it.
Meanwhile, at the mansion, Kitty thinks it's weird how she can't contact Cyclops's team or Cable. Colossus wonders if he should take the other Blackbird and split up, and Kitty chides him by asking him if he's ever watched any horror movies. When he tells her no, she says that they should start with the Shining or Dark Water. He jokingly tells her that if it's too scary, he might have to turn to her for comfort, Kitty likes the idea.
Blindfold watches her conversation with Colossus, then enters a room where the New X-Men are. Pixie has her pink and black streaked hair, so this takes place after Quest for Magik. Apparently, Pixie’s last name is Gwynn, and Blindfold’s name is Ruth Aloine. Well anyway, Blindfold says a lot of weird things about while he can see in light, he sees better by darkness, something about seeds inside them, and him knowing all about them... Something about being emblazoned in gold, and him wanting to destroy them. She goes directly to Elixir and grabs his hand. She says that the patient says "thank you" and touches his hand right when the spot of black goes there, while also touching his other hand at the same time, much to Josh's horror. She collapses.
Sunfire’s attacking the X-Jet and is making a small speech about how it would be more honorable to fight the X-Men face to face rather than ambushing them, before Sam gets out of the ship and makes a quip about how he was able to open the hatch doors and come out while Shiro was making his monologue and starts to fight him. Sunfire tells Sam how appropriate it is to first kill the master, then the student, implying that he killed Cable, making Sam furious. Sam says that unless he shows him a body, he refuses to believe it. Shiro then tells Sam that he wonders if, like a snail still being able to be burned alive inside its shell, would the same happen to him in his blast field? Sam says he doesn’t know, but he doesn’t intend to find out.
Meanwhile, Bobby is back on the X-Jet, and it’s going to crash soon since the wing’s on fire. He asks himself if he’s crazy or stupid for what he’s about to do, but then tells himself that if it doesn’t work, no one will find out anyway. He jumps out of the plane in human form and manages to ice up, saying he’s back in business. He helps Sam to defeat Shiro. When Sam asks him how he managed to ice up again, he said it was the wind chill, that and falling from 9,000 feet in the air. He then asks Sam if they were attacked because they were at the top of the list. Sam says that they didn’t even rank, he says first in the list was Rogue and second was...
Cut to Blindfold unconscious, the kids panicking. Santo asks Josh what the hell did he do? Josh says that Blindfold grabbed him, and that everyone saw it. They ask if she’s okay, and can he heal her? Josh says he’s tried already, but since Blindfold touched both of his hands at the same time, it isn’t working. (I guess that means that Blindfold’s dead) Pixie runs to get Kitty.
Kitty and Colossus are resetting the alarms and having a discussion about the Shining, particularly the scene in which the kid is riding a tricycle when he sees the two twin girls at the end of the hallway. Piotr asks what’s so scary about two little girls when they seem so innocent, and Kitty tells him that it’s all about the chill factor, that two seemingly harmless individuals could actually be so frightening. She then stops and asks if Piotr just felt his ears pop. (It’s an indication of a change in air pressure) Piotr, in armored form says that his ears don’t pop. There’s a huge explosion that partially levels the mansion, and Exodus, Frenzy, Random, Tempo and Unuscione enter the mansion. Exodus tells the Acolytes to deal with the X-Men and retrieve the books, while he would do the killing.

I always thought that Rogue and Gambit should adopt that Leech kid from X3.
