Don't say I never think of you guys. This weekend, at the Birmingham International Comic Show, I got Mike Carey to sign an issue of X-Men #200 to the Guild. It's across the back so that you can see Gambit there.

I also found out that Messiah CompleX is going to be clearing up a lot of things, including Mystique's motives for going back to the mansion way back before BoA.

I'm going to brag a little here because Kaz and I got to sit and have coffee with Mr Carey for about half an hour to discuss various things, which was absolutely amazing, and I made sure to thank him for bringing Gambit back, getting Rogue back to her ass-kicking self and all the other good work he's done on X-Men since he took over. I also got to ask him about what it's like to be an author and for advice on writing novels, but you guys probably aren't too interested in that.

Not that much, other than he's going to be explaining as many of the plot orphans concerning the members of his team as he can (like Mystique's motivations for returning to the mansion).

Mostly we talked to him about book writing, and I didn't really want to dig that hard about the comics. He did say that Rogue will be ok by the end of the crossover at least.

I want to know. I really want to publish one of my stories. What was the advice?

Well, one of his biggest tips was plan your story beats. Know what is going to happen when and where in the story, beginning to end. It doesn't matter if it changes slightly during the writing of it, the plan is important.

Another tip was when looking to be published try and get an agent first, since they have working relationships with the publishers and may well get your work looked at faster than if you send in an unsolicited manuscript.

Always aim your work. For example it makes no sense to send a piece of romance writing to a publisher who deals with horror.

Get a writers group to start with and then an editor. The writers group will pull your work apart with honest criticism until you start to improve, and the editor can save you some embarressing mistakes. It always helps to have someone who isn't close to the work look at it because they aren't going to be wordblind like you are.

If something doesn't work don't be afraid to either do something else and come back to it, or to pull it to pieces and start again.

Deadlines are your friend to a certain extent because they make you budget your time and have to push through the hurdles that otherwise you can procrastinate around.

Oh and it's ok to have days where you just can't write and you end up playing retro games.

Well there are publications that you can get that list agents and editors. Normally you'd approach someone on that list by sending them a sample of your work and going from there.

As for a writers group, your best bet is going to be to look online for a local group of writers who you can meet up with and share stories and ideas and feedback.

Finding the agent is really the most important part. Most publishers will ignore a writer that doesn't have an agent, and you gotta find an agent and a publisher that are working with the material you write- nothing worse than sending horror to a sci-fi publisher.
