Ok, since the Messiah CompleX one-shot is out and the ongoing crossover starts next week I'm starting a discussion thread for it. It's in the Gambit section because he's supposed to have a fairly big part in it.
My thoughts on the one-shot:
It's a good opening prelude, setting out quite nicely both the premise for the whole crossover (birth of a mutant child so powerful it shorted out Cerebra and got passed that pesky 'No More Mutants' thing) and the key players so far (X-Men, New X-Men, X-Factor, Marauders, Purifiers and Predator X). It's pretty much what we knew already, but it is only a prelude and it does what it says on the tin.
It's interesting to see that Gambit isn't holding back (the Purifiers he took down probably didn't get back up again) but what's also interesting is that he seems more concerned with getting to the baby before the Purifiers than the others, who seemed to want to break stuff for the most part.
It looks like Sinister may have the baby already, or at least that's what the X-Men think, but I'm not so sure. Malice (who could detect the child thanks to possessing Karima) said that she could sense the baby and that it wasn't alone. I think there might be another player involved, one that we haven't seen yet, and that will make things very interesting.
It's quite chilling to realise exactly how far the Purifiers are willing to go to kill the child. They essentially do a King Herod and, upon learning where the baby is, set out to kill all children in that town under a certain age just to be sure. They're probably one of the most dangerous threats that are facing mutants at this point in time.
As to the X-Men's interactions, well it was definitly old school. Scott is really seeming to step up as leader, even at this early stage, and the team that he was leading (Emma, Wolvie, Nightcrawler, Angel) all seemed to respect that. It'll be interesting to see how much more the X-Men gell and divide over the course of this crossover.
Now what are your thoughts? _________________ And I sit, endlessly watching the people as they walk below me, knowing that I will never walk among them, knowing I will never live as they have lived and loving them for it.
Well, I am certainly intrigued, and a little disappointed. It was a really good prelude, but it didnt build on what we already know, there was no surprise to it.
I like how Gambit does seem to have little qualms with killing people, but it is people who genuinely deserve it.
I didnt get into new X-men in time to find out about the Purifiers or Predator X, but the Purifiers do seem to be a terrifying and ruthless threat, willing to kill anything to acchieve their ends, I was quite shocked by the fact that they just took a flamethrower to an entire nursery.
While its pretty cool to see Angel back on an active team for once, I just dont much care for Brubakers team dynamics, they dont excite me much anymore. _________________ I always thought that Rogue and Gambit should adopt that Leech kid from X3.
"Alright son, you can sleep on dis here futon next to our bed! put on deese earmuffs, an' dis blindfold, and if you hear screamin' ignore it!"
I think/hope that Brubacker's team isn't going to be a permanent thing through this crossover. Saying that, it's nice to see Nightcrawler and Angel back on the team and it's nice to see some of the old interactions (various nicknames) coming back a bit.
I know what you mean about it being people that genuinely deserve it. It's something that makes me wonder a bit more about where his alliegences lay. The old Gambit wouldn't have killed at all after all.
I picked up New X-Men again (after a bit of a gap) just as the Purifiers hit and I've been following it pretty relentlessly since. They've never had any problem killing children, as seen by the 45 'depowered' students they blew up. It's going to be interesting to see just how they're dealt with.
As for there being no surprise, just wait until next week. That's when it really kicks off. I think this was mostly for people who haven't been following the news and the storylines so religiously as we have.
I have to admit that the art was a little touch and go for me. There were some panels that were really, really good... then again there were some panel's that were really, really not. I guess I'm kinda glad it's only a one off. _________________ And I sit, endlessly watching the people as they walk below me, knowing that I will never walk among them, knowing I will never live as they have lived and loving them for it.
