Is there any historical basis for Gambit's involvement in a guild in New Orleans? I was wondering if there actually are guilds in reality, for Cajuns in particular. Question

Hmmm....I don't know Kitty? Good question though! I imagine that Marvel thought it a good origin for Gambit because of it being 'a city of sin'....but I don't think there are Guilds of thieves and pick pockets operating on the level depicted in comics? Just regular smaller bands working together perhaps like you get anywhere!

I'm with Crimsy on this one. Although there are always crime organisations in any city, they're normally small gangs and not all that well organised. As for the Guilds depicted in the Marvel comics, the only thing I can think of that's even close to them is something like the Mafia or the Triads. I also doubt there is anything specifically for Cajuns.

However, as with most crime, I doubt any of us know exactly what goes on behind the scenes.

Thanks! I think you're right. I'm writing an English paper on whether or not Gambit is a good representaion of Cajuns, so this was a question I came up with and didn't have an answer to.

That does indeed sound interesting. I echo Crimsy, would you be able to post it here when you're done?

I'm sure I could. I just hope it's accurate enough to be shown to you guys! I admit that I'm no expert on Gambit, so don't expect it to be brilliant!

Don't worry about it. I'm sure it'll be an interesting read and none of us bite that hard Smile Seriously, you'll be fine posting it here.

Ok, thanks!  I can even make you my specific audience. My instructor wants us to choose a specific audience and write the paper in a tone that's right for them, so it will probably help me to write it with Gambit fans in mind if I'm actually going to have you read it!

Oh it sounds so interesting and even more so to hear how you view our Cajun! And I always like to know more about real-life cajuns, New Orleans, the Bayou and all that Gambit-related stuff! My big dream since I was 15 is to go to New Orleans one day...and all thanks to a comic book character.....I almost went too but my trip got cancelled when hurricane Katrina hit! Arghhh!

I also met a really nice (real) cajun guy in Memphis who was a Gambit fan. He said Gambit is an icon to them down south. I bet if it wasn't for him nobody outside the U.S would have even heard of 'a cajun'....

Oh that is so awesome!!  I wish I'd met a Cajun person; I want to know what they really sound like! And I guess Gambit isn't that bad of a representation if Cajuns like him so much!
I completely relate to you about wanting to go to New Orleans! I've wanted to visit it (because of Gambit) for several years now too!  Right now my brother is in Louisiana so I keep telling him to stay put so I have an excuse to go down there!

OH I nearly swooned and died on the spot when the cajun-guy took my hand and said 'laissez le bon rouleau de temps' *happy sigh*

Mmmmmmmmm!

LOL....my husband was with me though! Luckily he was chatting to some other guy and never noticed my swooning! Hahaha!

Oh you are lucky to have a good excuse to go! I feel like my only chance has fled and god knows when I'll get another chance! Years probably!

Its not surprising those in New Orleans like Gambit so much! Lucky for them that he is cool and HOT and suave a character with way cool powers! Better than, say, Toad being their icon! LOL

Actually if you need anything else knowledge wise about New Orleans you could PM (private message) Avarice who went there this year to help clean up and also we have a member Cajunbebe (click on members list top of screen) who IS a cajun chick. She hasn't been around in a long time but she may answer your questions?

Lol, how charming!

I think your chances of getting an opportunity to go to New Orleans are actually better than mine!

Thanks for the info, too!

Well I was 15 when I was like 'I AM going to New Orleans one day!' I was planning to get a loan out when I was old enough and go during Mardi Gra! However I met my now-hubby at 19 and we travelled loads but it was only the year before last that I finally got my wish and booked New Orleans! Now I am 28 and have had a baby so my chances are VERY reduced, living here in the UK to boot.

LOL...sorry for the history! I think you definitely oughta grab your chance whilst your young and the urge is within you to make it happen!!!

Smile

Maybe after college. Right now I'm a poor college student, so I don't know.
Heck, you don't need to go anywhere, you're already in the UK! Just kidding. I'm jealous, though!
