I'm tired, so sorry if this is stated weird or doesn't make much sense! It's just another thing I'm considering with my paper.
Could Gambit be described as "earthy?" I don't really even know what that means, but it's a word that was used to describe Cajuns.

Earthy eh? Well yes...if you look it up in the dictionary, here, it says this:

1 a : of, relating to, or consisting of earth <earthy creatures like worms> b : suggestive of earth (as in texture, odor, or color) <an earthy yellow> c : rough, coarse, or plain in taste <earthy flavors>

2 a archaic : EARTHLY , WORLDLY b : characteristic of or associated with mortal life on the earth <prefers earthy to ethereal themes>

3 : suggestive of plain or poor people or their ways: as a : PRACTICAL , DOWN-TO-EARTH <earthy problems of daily life> b : CRUDE , GROSS <earthy humor> c : plain and simple in style : UNSOPHISTICATED <earthy peasant cookery> <earthy decor> <earthy clothes>

Take no1......that could relate to the colours and styles of their clothes, being made from natural fibres and usually of browns. With Gambit it could be said that his trench coat is quite earthy in style.

Point two suggests to their culture and the whole voodoo/tailisman/magic and religious beliefs that are deeply ingrained in the Louisianna and Deep South mind-set. (or believed to be, I can't really comment on actual true life)

Point three is perhaps the most helpful. With regards to Cajuns and the South it is considered very poor in places, esp the Bayous, and the way of life quite simple. In relation to Gambit with his history of thieving and living in the Guild Tunnels you could definitely relate that to being 'earthy'.

Hope that helps? Your essay is throwing up some great new questions! FAB!

Its very enjoyable actually! Like on the various Guilds the same questions emerge time and time again...which is ok, new people and new answers and all that, but who would have thought to ask 'is Gambit earthy?' Hahaha.........must be a first! And I love chewing over new ideas and rambling over theories! Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

Yeah, well I certainly wouldn't come up with deep questions if I weren't having to write an English paper! I guess school does actually make us think & learn... Shocked

Oh it sure does! You wouldn't believe how brain-dead you can get once you leave! LOL

Seriously, after I left college I got a job in a supermarket (was only mean't to be a year cos I was sick of learning by then!) and within a few years even simple spelling went down hill! Very Happy

Hahaha....well your brain can probably do with the rest!

I always think its funny how parents don't seem to understand and are like 'oh but you should try working like I do! Thats hard!' but its not....well, not the same. When you do a job day in day out its routine and boring but its easy cos you know what to do! But school work's like this paper and that exam and that paper all in the same week! argh! I don't miss it! But I do miss the seeing-my-friends side of it!

I agree!! I always tell my parents I can't wait to have a regular job, if for no other reason than not having homework! I think it's been so long since they were in school that they've forgotten how miserable schoolwork is.

Crimmy, my highly venerated and oh-so-delightful Reine Rouge pointed me to this thread and asked if I had anything to add...not sure why she'd ask me that, especially seeing as how she's done a great job of already answering it.  The only thing I'd ask is did you possibly mean: Is Gambit EARTHLY...or perhaps someone was using 'earthy' as a synonym for 'earthy'.  Which typically 'earthly' is defined as: of or pertaining to the earth.  But sometimes 'earthly' is used to describe people, and in such cases it means they are very concerned with material things...things such as wealth or other possessions.  And some people might describe Remy as being 'earthly' because he's a thief and tends to take possessions.  However I'd disagree here.  I think he takes things, or at least used to take things, more for the thrill.  If he was earthly he'd most likely be more showy in his possessions, but look at him, does he look like a guy who's wealthier than Xavier?

Though it seems I was a bit late with it.  I didn't read the date of your original post until after I'd responded.  Good article by the way.
