Hey y'all, been a while since I've been here. I've missed it, the forum that is. I can certainly trust this site for information on Gambit and the X-Men and have been here many times. =)
I wanted to open up some ideas to everyone about issue #204 of X-Men. That part of the story where Gambit is talking to Rogue, then we see what she is "apparently" thinking about as she is lost in her mind. After this, she suddenly wakes up and says: "Oh gosh, Remy, I had this sick, stupid dream..." I read an interview with Mike Carey and Ed Brubaker where the interviewer asked them both what fans should look to for clues on what secrets are behind the Messiah Complex story. Mike Carey suggested we go back to everything that happened between Rogue and Mystique ~ their interactions. Then Ed Brubaker said: "Is Rogue Mystique? Is Mystique someone else?"
I kept wondering how this could be. Now I look at that scene, and believe me it didn't kick in at first ~ I was always wondering why, if Rogue was holding onto those memories as she's trapped in her mind with billions of alien minds, she would say she had a "sick, stupid dream." Now I'm thinking...yeah...that probably is Mystique!!! But how could Mystique have the same powers as Rogue? Maybe they were switched after X-Men 200? Thoughts? What purpose would there be for this?
First off, we've seen Mystique already, acting like Mystique and convincing everyone whose known her before that she's Mystique. Either it's someone who is a very good actor, or it really is Mystique (which is what my money is on).
Secondly, we know that Rogue's powers were amped by Pandemic and we've seen what that can do with Hecatomb. And in #204 we've been shown what's in her mind, which not only has what she absorbed but also memories of all the time that she's spent with Remy. These are memories that Mystique could not have. Sure, she's been there for a couple of them but no where near all of them.
I think the statement of the interactions between Mystique and Rogue means more the sort of thing where Mystique has been trying to re-establish the parental relationship and where she's told Remy that things aren't always what they seem. _________________ And I sit, endlessly watching the people as they walk below me, knowing that I will never walk among them, knowing I will never live as they have lived and loving them for it.
As in saying that Mystique isn't really on the 'bad' side? That perhaps she knew somehow that Rogue was going to need her which is why she came to join the X-Men? Hasn't she read or seen the destiny diaries? I mean, with how close M and Destiny were it wouldn't be a huge leap to think she is doing what she is doing to protect or save Rogue? Perhaps she even confided in Gambit way back when she was Foxx and that was why he switched sides too? All part of a bigger plan to position themselves where they needed to be for Rogue and/or mutantkind? _________________ *

I think it might well have something to do with the fact that Mystique has read Destiny's Diaries. In #204 Sinister mentions this to her, saying that he doesn't really need Rogue because it's all in her head, and she replies that she's wearing a telepathic blocker for a reason. She also very deliberately shot Rogue, ensuring that nobody else did, and made sure it wasn't fatal. _________________ And I sit, endlessly watching the people as they walk below me, knowing that I will never walk among them, knowing I will never live as they have lived and loving them for it.
Yes, that all points to some deeper meaning to Mystiques motives! And we already know she isn't on Sinnys side out of loyalty to him!
The question though is whether Gambit has his OWN agenda or is working WITH Mystique and their animosity to eachother is a front? (well, genuine too iykwim but put aside for whatever the bigger picture is)) _________________ *
