Here is what I think: these weren't Mike Carey's exact words, but he alluded to it when he said that he couldn't NOT revisit the relationship between Gambit and Rogue when it has been such an important story element for so long (especially, he said, after the way it was left when Blood of Apocalypse ended). The idea that Gambit and Rogue are in love with each other I THINK only accentuates their individual characteristics because they are both so rebellious, brazen, tough, and unpredictable ~ it is not what you'd immediately expect from characters such as this.  It may always be expected for each character to remain "solo," because that is part of their (forgive the cliche) "swash-buckling," fighter persona.  For Gambit, it should be noted that from the beginning he was also mysterious and shady (I believe he was originally intended as a villain to infiltrate and destroy the X-Men from within), so the fact that this is what happens to these characters...I think it is quite special in that way ~ from a literary perspective.  I agree that the relationship between Gambit and Rogue works best, obviously, when it is well written, and my hope is that they continue with it at some point in the future.  But I also concede that given many writers have handled their relationship quite poorly, it may be better off if that wasn't in the IMMEDIATE future.  As a writer, what would disappoint me on such a colossal scale would be if their relationship was distastefully "done away with," and they just became two other characters who aren't really friends, teammates, or even enemies...just sharing the same panel once and a while.  If anything, I believe that would be to please the fans who merely do not like Gambit and Rogue together more than anything else.  BUT...I think it would be ill-concieved, and just in general extremely disappointing.  I see no literary rationale why anyone would do something like that!!!! We've got these two great characters who, again, because of who they both are as individuals(unpredictable, rebellious, tough), you wouldn't expect them to fall madly in love and actually want to stay together (especially in a cynical world which is becoming more and more so).  I think these are the elements that make Gambit such an undervalued, underrated and interesting character ~ because he is always suspected of being the traitor, the villain, the jerk/bad-guy, and time and time again he proves it all wrong and comes out a hero.  That's what makes him such an amazing character people!!!! He's a hero, he CANNOT be a villain, that would be such a huge disaster for a character (again, from a writer's perspective).
I would love to see Gambit and Rogue explore their individual journeys, but much in the same way we know there will be a meeting again for Scott Summers and Jean Grey, I would like to see these two characters reunite...NOT AS FRIENDS.  I apologize for the rant, just my two cents is all.   =)
