the picture of the dipper repair is by far the scariest thing i could think to see (in eddytechs pics.) i hope that is not a sign of things to come. the other pics on this sight of the mutilation of the park are bad enough, but just the thought .... I guess we really do live in a disposable society, history be gone. sad, very sad |

I didn't think I could hate Dick and Cedar Fair any more than I already did. Silly me. |

Good article (although based on the name of that link I was expecting some tales of professional wrestling or groups of youth "rumbling" as in West Side Story!) Really interesting sidebar on the mechanics of moving a wood coaster.
The article notes that Tom Woosnam of Apex Western Machinery Movers "said he was acting on behalf of a local company that wanted to move the ride and preserve it for historical purposes" and who "wished to remain unidentified until announcing plans for the ride and the Raging Wolf Bobs." However, "formal plans were never announced, and Woosnam apparently has tried to market the Big Dipper to ride-preservation groups." Apparently Woosnam "offered to sell components of the ride, including the historic rail cars, for about $100,000, a sign that he isn't concerned about keeping the ride intact" according to Richard Munch. Woosnam refuses to comment on plans for the Big Dipper.
Richard Munch of ACE and Herschman Architects said "it probably would take a miracle" for the Herschman/ACE plan of incorporating the Big Dipper into retail and dining by the lake to go forward but he is optimistic that the Big Dipper "and maybe even part of the park, will be preserved, depending on who the final owners are."
He also notes that it would have been good to see see the "local municipalities, boards, mayors and trustees" more involved because "It's not every day that you lose a century of history because of a land deal."
If you live in the area or have relatives who do, think about contacting the officials in Bainbridge and Aurora (the area behind the Ballroom and the Big Dipper's turnaround is in Aurora). New development can impose many types of additional burdens on a community. Aurora made the developer at Barrington Town Center put a small park in along with the shops in exchange for approval, why not do that at Geauga Lake?

For some reason the pics wont show with Firefox when you click the link. IE works fine.
I posted the rest here:

This was from around 1989 I believe. I worked there after the season ended doing cleaning/painting on food stands.

I was just poking around RCDB, and correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the new "12 Oldest" list, presuming our beloved Miller never runs again? (Accurate to within same opening year, at this point a month difference is barely bragging rights...)
1 - Scenic Railway, Luna Park, Melbourne
2 - Jack Rabbit, Seabreeze, NY
3 - Jack Rabbit, Kennywood, PA
3 - Roller Coaster, Lagoon (Tie)
5 - Big Dipper, Pleasure Beach
5 - Thunderhawk, Dorney Park and WWK
7 - Giant Dipper, Santa Cruz, CA
7 - Thunderbolt, Kennywood, CA
(Our beloved pile 'o lumber goes here....)
9 - Hullábrasút, Vidámpark
10 - Legend, Arnold's Park, IA
11 - Racer, Kennywood, PA
12 - Wildcat, Lake Compounce (Congrats to Lake Compounce!) |

I challenge your list in two ways. You forgot Leap the Dips at Lakemont Park which was built in 1902 I believe.
Also according to Kennywood, T-bolt is only 40 years old this year. _________________ Confidentiality is telling one person at a time.

Leap the Dips isn't included because it doesn't show up on the "opened" pages in 1902.
http://www.rcdb.com/ir.htm?opened=1902
Also, Luna Park's website claims that Scenic Railway is the oldest, so... yeah.
Regardless, it does mean that Kennywood has 3 of the 12 oldest coasters in the world, unless Pippin/Thunderbolt is excluded on a technicality. |

Leap the Dips RCDB page, shows two openings, 1902 and 1999 because of the many years of SBNO and the rebuilt. Scenic Railway therefore has the oldest continuous operating coaster. _________________ Confidentiality is telling one person at a time.

Conneaut Lake Park has been saved! Four businessmen have leased portions of the park with big plans, some which have already begun. I'm telling ya, this would be a great home for the Big Dipper. These four men are willing to unload a ton of money to make this park survive with good traditional values. I think they would respect and care for it for sure. Read on...

Don't get too excited--read the article and NOWHERE does it mention the ride part. After reading the comment section most people think the same thing--no rides, just condo's and possibly another casino. Sounds like developers are going with reatail/housing not an amusement park. |
