· Quote

Hello all,

I emailed Kennywood last night with an idea that my 12 year old son had.

I explained to them that I had never been to the park yet, but I plan on a visit very very soon and that I've heard nothing but great things about them.  I wrote that I understood that Cedar Point's attendance is not what they wished it would be so far this summer and that I heard there was some fierce competition between Kennywood and CP for the Cleveland market.  My son suggested that they have a day (or days) where they honor other season passes from other parks, or at least give a greatly discounted rate when you present your pass from another park.  (I told them I would visit either way, whether or not they used my son's idea.)

I got a reply back this morning.  The gentleman that replied seemed to love the idea!  They said they will consider it for 2009.  He went on to say that yes they are indeed advertising heavily for the Cleveland market due to GL's closure, and they also stated that it was very sad that the park had to close.  He didn't bad mouth Cedar Point at all; in fact, he told me he worked there in the 70's and thought it was a great park.

I think the idea looks pretty promising; my email + their reply was forward to several other(s) (employees, possibly?)

Just thought I'd share...

Now that is what I call good public relations.

All of the Geauga Lake folks should get together and do a company type picnic at Kennywood.

That is a great idea your son had.

If CF had your son doing the marketing for them, maybe they wouldnt have closed Geauga.

The combined intellect of everyone in management at CF from the CEO down is that of a 3 years old.

Thats pretty sad really when a 3 year old can do better then some old far CEO! Also I really like that idea....its a good way to grab a few more customers and for Kennywood that means more $$$.  Right now I wouldn't mind Kennywood taking advantage of the economy and making CP suffer a little. (I know park size is differant and probally wouldn't make a huge differance). I'm just saying it would be cool for Kennywood to steal some of those cedar fair customers. I'm hoping for 2009 they think about implementing that idea.

Kennywood is a classic american park... it's Geauga Lake before the Six Flags explosion. They should be thrilled that GL closed... because they never competed with Cedar Point. Kennywood has always promoted more of a family experience... most of the rides are more suitable for youngsters...
It's great that you recieved an honest reply! Everything I've ever heared of that was sent to Cedar Fair was met with either no response or a "thanks for writing" formated reply.
Kudos to your son, and to Kennywood for not being creeps!

Honestly, we wouldn't mind having a Geauga Lake Today Day at any local non-Cedar Fair owned park. Seriously, we all get together, families and all and have a great time at a great park in the area.

I would be more then happy to help arrange it.

I remember back in 2004 or 2005, there was a billboard right outside of Kennywood that stated "The park that's closer isn't even close!"  The billboard featured a photo of Thunderhawk and was obviously from Geauga Lake.  It sounded like they were implying that Geauga Lake was better than Kennywood.  If that was indeed the case, why is Kennywood still open and drawing big crowds and that other park no longer exists?  I guess the park that was closer to that billboard gets the win.

Katie:

The fiancee and I are going to Kennywood for a post-wedding weekend out of town.  Either August 16th or 23rd.  (Yeah, Saturdays are teh suck for lines, but she has no time off that she can take...)  REMOTE possibility of August 11th.  (The new aunts and uncles in-law want to go to Cedar Point... Must be getting tired of Valleypoint!  Razz  I'm trying to redirect to Waldameer or Kennywood instead.)

Wish we could join you. More then likely I will be in the hospital staying with the baby until she is released.

The next park you will see us at, if any in August will be closing weekend that Saturday at Waldameer.

Otherwise, we will be at PPP at Knoebels on the first weekend of October for some seriously good Phoenix, Twister and FT if its open rides.

Actually I just got back from Kennywood and had a blast! There was lots of improvements since I was last there in 2001 and I had a very enjoyable day. It was crowded though. I purposely went on July 4th because their website said it was their least busy day and on top of that the news said it was going to rain all day but we still managed to have some waits.

I don't know if anyone else has been there but I absolutely LOVE their park maps/guides!!! They make them half the size of the ones parks normally have so they fit in you pockets. Why other parks haven't picked up on this I'll never know?!?

Oh yes...I do love their park maps... I think its definatly one thing that sets them apart from many parks is the park map you can fit in your pocket without it buldging.
