· Quote

As was reported in the press, the Geauga County Historical Society bought the contents of the Palace Theater and some other items from the park at the auction. They have some smaller, but neat stuff that could be displayed at their facilities in Burton, Ohio in the future (not yet ready for visitors though).

I've been informed that the Society has an opportunity to relocate a newer structure from the park, the Haybaler barn, to be used for displaying the items they have obtained, but may need some support in the form of donations and volunteers. (Unfortunately it is not feasible for them to relocate some of the other, older structures).  The Society has also obtained one of the Geauga Lake pavilions for other uses.

Though it may not be one of the older buildings, this project would preserve part of Geauga Lake park. More importantly, it would provide a home for some of the artifacts that the Society has been able to obtain from the park, which even now is rapidly being dismantled.

What the Society needs is some indication that there will be support from the community, in the form of donations and perhaps volunteers to help with the construction work. The contact person is Cheryl at (440) 834-1492 or at sitemanager@geaugahistorical.org. If you can help, please contact her as it is my understanding that the Society needs to know there would be support for the project (please don't contact her just to ask about specific plans or what they have, that will be announced later).

Maybe the Big Dipper will be relocated here as a historical piece. It is historical and even if we can't ride it it would be great to have it nearby so we can visit it and the cars and see the other stuff from GL. I hope this really does happen. It would be great to see this stuff again from our park.

I'm going to contact her tomorrow.

Sadly... no matter what happens to BD the cars will never be there again (not that they were original cars anyway).  Miller trains are of a fairly common guage and many coasters (even not classic Miller coasters) run cars completly compatible with BD's cars.  The cars have already been moved to other woodies.

Remember the old train at Geauga Lake in the 70's?  That "train" used back-up Dipper cars.

CF knew what they had... that's why the trains were not included in the auction of BD.

Good to hear there is some interest.  I really hope this project happens.

(By the way, the Big Dipper auction did include the cars unlike Villain and Raging Wolf Bobs; but as far as I know the Society is not involved in the Big Dipper efforts - that is between Cedar Fair, the APEX/Woosnam secret buyer and whatever input ACE has at this point, hopefully there will be some good news there as well in the future.)

When I was at the auction they had the Big Dipper cars in storage under plastic near the pavillions. The auction for the Big Dipper included 8 trains but no trains for RWB.

Yeah, I thought the brochure said the Dipper trains were included with the auction; just not Villian or RWB.

Here is the mailing address for the Society:

Geauga County Historical Society

Burton, OH  44021

Consider doing what you can.  The Society has done a nice job with Century Village in Burton, I am sure that if they get the necessary resources they will provide a nice home for the Geauga Lake items they were able to get at the auction.  It would be great to see the Haybaler barn relocated and used for that.

I like the idea of there being at least one place in Northeast Ohio where people can take their grandkids, kids or nieces & nephews to show them some things that were at Geauga Lake.

What did they buy at the auction? What do they plan on relocating there? It would be great to see the stuff from GL again and be able to take people there to see the stuff.

They bought the contents of the Palace Theater and some other items from around the park.  They got some neat stuff including costumes for Dandy Lion and Shamu, items related to shows in the theater, and some things they will be able to salvage from the theater building itself.  They also got pictures, posters, some game-related items, a small car and some signs from around the park.  In addition to that stuff, they hopefully will be relocating the Haybaler barn and a pavilion from the park.

It's not ready to be displayed yet (and they did not want people to go to Burton hoping to see it now and be disappointed), but it should be pretty neat when it is.  Even if some of the stuff is newer, it still helps preserve some of the history for future generations.

I know The Double Loop was bought by a scrap dealer. Did they scrap the cars also? Maybe GCHS could keep a car from DL. Wishful thinking

I received information indicating that the Geauga County Historical Society has received a number of volunteers.

The bad news is the board is reluctant to go ahead on the Haybaler barn relocation without the funds available, and time is running out.  Again, it's not all that old a building, but would have been a nice Geauga Lake connection to display the GL items they have.  Their address:

^ Yes, from what I understand the push to make this happen is on.  Cedar Fair wants to know when the building can be removed, and the Historical Society's board still need to be convinced to pursue the plan.

So, if you were waiting to contact the society about making a donation or being a volunteer make that contact NOW!

You can call the Society at 440-834-1492 and then them know of your intentions.

They also bought the Geauga Dog costume, I don't know if anyone mentioned that...pretty cool!! It was found in the attic of the Palace.

Did they pay for the Haybaler station? Why can't they just take it down and reassemble it and ask for donations after the project is finished like they did at Blvd. Of Flags and 9/11/01 Memorial in Eastlke. I am available to volunteer if they need help in anyway but I don't have alot of extra cash available to donate.
