| At one time both Geauga Lake and Cedar Point had the Matterhorn theme flat ride. What was the thinking behind renaming it? I always liked the Matterhorn theme to the ride. I think moving the ride was stupid too because you had two rides right by the 50s midway that were really very popular most of the time. Muzik Express and Matterhorn. |

Yukon Yahoos all the way, the mole people were excellent. By the way, does anyone have photos of the mole people? _________________ Confidentiality is telling one person at a time. |

I'd love to see some photos of the Matterhorn theme. _________________ Positions Held:

I don't remember the Yukon Yahoos???
When did this happen? Certainly not in this decade, otherwise it would have been the Georgian Googles.
Sorry, couldn't help it. |

Ray P. would know around the time it was re-themed but I believe it was moved around the time Mr. Hyde was added.
That was a magical corner back then. Musik Express, Matterhorn, Yo-Yo, and Tilt-A-Whirl all close to each other. It was a great entrance to the midway.
In a way moving the Yahoos to the spot that would eventually become the home to the Power City Stage/Dominator was a good move. I mean instead of a long, dead midway to RWB you actually had another ride other than Grizzly Run. _________________ On September 21, 2007, a historic 119-year old amusement park had been secretly murdered. Ah yes the Yukon Yahoo's. 1996 was the last year up front. I was put temporarly on the Tilt-a-whirl, Yukon Yahoo's, Music Express,Mind Eraser, and the YoYo. I was moved onto the Yukon one day. Right before my very first run, they exchanged me with the Music Express Operator, I later had the priveledge of running the Yahoo. The biggest and best Fan I ever stood in front of. There was never a hot day on that ride. In 97 they moved in Mr Hyde's nasty POS.
And started the biggest mistake of redoing the 50's midway. Almost as big a mistake as all the advertising they gave the Mirage. The name fit that ride, Because the thrill and excitment was just that, A Mirage. _________________ Remember......Fan Boys and Haters are always good for one thing. A one sided argument. Sorry to be bumping this almost two weeks later, but Matterhorn got rethemed and repainted into Yukon Yahoo in 1988. Then they relocated it from the front of the park to the back near where Silver Bullet was in 1997-1998 to make room for Nasty Fall (it shows the exact position on the map, I believe; it was over near where Knight Flight/Dominator would later be built). They had repainted it again by this time and stripped it of most of its theming. During the offseason of 2001 it was rethemed as Hay Baler and moved over to the former site of the Scrambler/Flying Scooters, and left in that same spot until the park's closing.
However, I don't know the exact reasons of the two rethemings.
About the Matterhorn before it was rethemed, it looked a lot like Cedar Point's, but was mostly painted white/shades of light blue, instead of mostly blue. If I remember right from the picture, it also had Olympic rings under the sign.
I had a picture of it, but I'm not sure if it's here on my computer anymore. The picture came from a website whose name I cannot recall at the moment.
EDIT: Here's the picture of GL's Matterhorn:
EDIT 2: Here's a picture of the Yukon Yahoo circa 2000:

Now wait....
The way I remember the Matterhorn, it was built into a wooden pavilion across the midway from the Muzik. This would have been 89-91-ish... All wood, including the floor under the cars. |

During the '88 season Matterhorn reopened as Yukon Yahoo, and they had completely rethemed it, and it was indeed in a wooden building (from what I can recall; I was only 3 the first time I rode it, which was about '91 or so). It stayed in that pavilion for maybe 8 or so years, until the whole outside of the ride was rebuilt; the picture of the result of that is the second picture shown in my original post.
I find it kinda funny, though, how while the ride was rethemed, it stayed in that spot in the front of the park across from the Musik for a pretty long stretch of time. I don't know how long as I'm going from what my dad says, and what some maps we had from back then showed. |
